Guest Owen Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 Many people like to use substances that acidify the gut thinking it does all sorts of good. Citric acid is just one. I think it probably started in an attempt to either protect the birds from YBS or try to make them better when they have got it. I think that the vitamins and minerals in some of these things are beneficial but I think these benefits are lost because the last thing that pigeons need is an acid gut. The most important thing for pigeons is pure unfiltered sunshine which combined with calcium helps them to produce vitamin "D" naturally. Calcium and magnesium are important because like other birds pigeons need to have strong bones and feathers. This means that pigeons benefit from an alkaline system and feeding them acids will compromise that.If you want your birds to be really healthy make sure that there is an upward current of air inside the loft and give them access to unfiltered sunshine and change the grit every day without fail. The good thing about these two important health giving things is that they are both free.
Tony C Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 Vitamin C from lemons aids the absorption of the B vitamins. This is why its the choice of many who use them as a means to mix/stick brewers yeast onto the pigeon feed. IMO pigeons should be given plain drinking water as often as possible, additives if possible should be mixed on their feed.
