Guest Owen Posted September 26, 2009 Report Posted September 26, 2009 Staffies are lovely dogs, and great family pets. Guard dogs, doubtful. OK for cats and rats, though. If you really want a guard dog you need a Japanese Aquita, a Rhodesian Ridgeback or even a Pit Bull. Believe me either of these breeds would make mincemeat of anyone or their dog that would dare to risk it. Now if you want to run guard dogs in pairs rather than singles, German Shepards, Rotwielers, or Dobermans would be good. On the other hand if it is just a warning you want, a pair of Jack Russells would be very good.
Guest Owen Posted September 26, 2009 Report Posted September 26, 2009 I our area there is a Free Ads paper that comes out every Wednesday. They are usually in there and they are called Staffy crosses. All you need to do, is have a look at the parents and you will see what they are straight away. The other way of finding them is to watch out for them in the street. You will see loads of them. Just ask the owners where they came from. If you are unsure of how to recognise them, have a look at the pictures on your computer. There are plenty to give you the idea.

I always think a yappy dog is as good as deterent as something that will rip an intruder to pieces...Just as well for me really!

Have been doing quite a bit of research on these dogs as my son wants one.And have to concur with Owen from what i have been reading due to their selective breeding to be human friendly they are not the best of guard dogs. But in saying that their fierce reputation may off put unwanted guests.Wish you all the best with your new pup, hoping to have one soon myself.
chickadee Posted September 26, 2009 Report Posted September 26, 2009 Staffies are brilliant dogs if you have kids, they have great temperaments, ours would lick you to death (if your name is not valliant), ;D ;D ;D ;D

blaz Posted September 26, 2009 Report Posted September 26, 2009 these make good guard dogs to in my opinion German shepherds /alsatians make the best guard dogs . more brains and sense than most.
allenyeates Posted September 26, 2009 Report Posted September 26, 2009 wer do u get pitbulls bbb More about than you realise. Advertised under different names. Fantastic dogs with a perfect temperement. It,s only the arseholes that exploit them that gives them a bad reputation. Lost one at Easter to cancer (10 years old) best dog I ever had. Would sit next to me on patio chair and scan the sky for pigeons on race day, when a bird come he would hop off his seat and wait by back door till I clocked then come down to the loft and peer through the bars. Never had any trouble from cats, rats or 2 legged vermin when BIG TONY was around. Please do not belive all what you hear or read about bull breeds. They are what you make them. NO dog is born bad.

I always think a yappy dog is as good as deterent as something that will rip an intruder to pieces...Just as well for me really! Only problem if they yap all day no one takes any notice, a dog is only a deterrent to most people as they can be easily quietened by doping them. ###### had an an Alsatian that was an ex-police dog and it would only accept food from him as this is how they are trained :-/
blaz Posted September 26, 2009 Report Posted September 26, 2009 as for wee zara at the top i think she has alredy decided who she is going to guard .that will also include when he is playing rough and tumble with his mates
Craig05 Posted September 27, 2009 Report Posted September 27, 2009 My choice of Guard dog. (Boerbull) also known as African mastiff.
Guest grizzler Posted September 27, 2009 Report Posted September 27, 2009 german sheperds, the best guards by far. ;)
terry mccarthy Posted September 27, 2009 Report Posted September 27, 2009 if u are going to have a staffie now makes sure its a true one as any crosses are being taken off there owners as they walk them there are so many pitbulls down here its unreal but now police are taking no crap if your dog is over a certain height then its history and u have no say in the matter my sisters dog was put to sleep withing half hour of it being taken i thought that was against the law but seems not just be carefull walking your dog lol
