just ask me Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 been reading a bit lately on how birds navigate never realized some evidence points to birds having a sense of smell being important anyone else have a opinion on this
OLDYELLOW Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 Old Hand mention's this in the four winds , and he felt it important that the birds loft location allowed for the four winds in the loft as the smells in the location of flora and fauna actually positioned the loft . A few years back I saw a documentary where a pigeon was hooded and released outside it's loft and relocated the trap and entered the loft after been on the roof which the narrator said backed up this theory . A bird as well as a car needs oxygen so if that oxygen is restricted then in both cases poor performance will take place . There are products on the market but I think there too severe . Put one drop of eculptus ( olbas ) oil on the birds box / perch night before basketing this will keep the airways clear . I did read a continental fancier did similar on basketing adding one drop of oil on each birds tail can't remember name tho
andy Burgess Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 have read about ,and seen a documentary on the same .thought it was very interesting.

Guest geordiejen Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 watched a tv programme on it and there seems to be people who believe different things or a combination of things.we know other birds can do it thousands of miles.fish can live their lives at sea and return to the very stream they were born.turtles dolphins and whales all have a built in navigation system which us humans dont understand.
Guest chad3646 Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 geordiejen i understand what you are saying regarding the fish and the whales, the birds on the other hand coming hear or going back rely on the winds and thermals , the swallow for instance it does,nt just say hey im of back to africa ,its got to wait for that correct wind, so , the pigeons on the other hand have no option they are liberated in any wind
