Guest Vic Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 I have a large sycamore tree at the end of my yb loft. It is actually inside my yb flight, which was built around it, and has perches attached to it. On Tuesday morning there was a squirrel on the roof of the yb loft , near the tree. Very unusual in this area, I thought! Equivalent maybe, of a polar bear in the tropics. It seemed rather tame, so I gave it a few peanuts............ Needless to say! It has now appeared each morning and evening, for its nuts, Peanuts that is. Some of the grandkids have even been down to see it. All good fun. BUT! I am sure that some of you guys who live in the "sticks" can enlighten VIc, whether it poses a threat i.e . to my birds, through disease etc. Would a cat take a squirrel out by the way? I know they eat birds eggs and nestlings SOMETIMES. Please give me your opinions. Vic.
Guest karl adams Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 when i had song birds hanged out on the fence i had 1 or 2 killed i thought it was hawks then 2 days latter we saw a squirrel go along the fence straight to one of my other bird cages he reached in grabbed the bird and ripped the birds chest open and just eat the seed so be careful
Guest shadow Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 get rid of the squirrel could cause a lot of problems
ALF Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 Vic if you dont get rid of the squirrel it'll be in the loft stealing grub and upsetting all the doos trust me i had problems with them 2 yrs ago and caught over a dozen in a couple of weeks
DOVEScot Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 We had birds getting attack in one of our lofts, feet missing, eggs missing and damaged to the point they died, our loft is as vermin proof as possible we thought, we have a beech tree which the squirrels ferried the nuts all day long, so we set some traps thinking it was a rat, what we caught was a grey squirrel, since discouraging them we have had no more bother, nothing else ever caught in the traps. Get rid just in case, well named tree rats :-/
Guest Vic Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 After reading members comments, which I find a bit harsh on the poor old squirrel, I have decided to have an extra pet around the garden. Afterall, I don't live in a wooded area and this squirrel , believe you me, has done well to survive so far. When I see two, I will start thinking. But I reckon this one is a loner, only time will tell.

Bluedoo Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Serious question, red or grey squirrel. Think red ones are protected ( yes i know so are sparr*whawks and the like are protected as well) but I know which ones I would prefer.
DOVEScot Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 Serious question, red or grey squirrel. Think red ones are protected ( yes i know so are sparr*whawks and the like are protected as well) but I know which ones I would prefer. They a culling the grey's as they are not native to this country and they are killing off the reds which are native. Believe that if you like, I think it is because grey's do more damage to annoy the forrestry business's lobby :-/
THE FIFER Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 Serious question, red or grey squirrel. Think red ones are protected ( yes i know so are sparr*whawks and the like are protected as well) but I know which ones I would prefer. people dont realise it but all birds are protected, some more so than others, but get caught killing a sparrow or a crow your in big trouble, the only birds that dont get much protection is pigeons, streets or racers.

I think Dovey's not far away, because they are bark eaters.
Guest Vic Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 what ,,, ;D ;D ;D the grand kids?? ;D aw cmon sammy ;D ;D ;D Yes Jim. lol. By the way, his name is Cyril. I think Basil was a fox by the way. lol.
Guest Freebird Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 tell you one thing they make a lovelly pot of soup ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Tastes a bit nutty though!!! It will definitely be a grey and it will give you trouble in the end. They are opportunists and if hungry enough will eat or terrorise your birds. Yes they look cute but so does a mink (especially wrapped round the female form). Trap it and dispose of it humanely and the grand kids will never know, unless of course they ask where you got the new Davy Crocket hat (evil)
