look like american jokes and they only half (?) what we do. consider this...every time the oil price rises the cost of fuel by 8.5p/l the govt. adds 1.5p in vat(so it becomes a 10p hike)...yet the duty on fuel remains the same. why can't the duty be lowered as the vat rises?

I don't think the americans have the monpoly on these jokes, it is a worldwide hike and it's no joke, £1.30 a litre for diesel and you have to hunt for it.

Maybe the should take a lead from the unions and cap prices the same as they do wage rises, now we are joking, it will never happen, goverments need taxes to operate no matter what one we have.  :-/

no implied critiscism of jokes being american just saying they're howling at half our price.....what if they had our tax on top? of course goverments need to raise taxes...all i'm saying is that if the vat goes up bring the duty down so they are raising the same. if they want more put it up in the budget when we are all aware of it.

Aye, I know but if you get ill in America as my son did when I was working there it was $100 to see the doctor the more dollars for consultant fee then more dollars for the medicine, although we pay huge taxes and can moan, rightly so about how the powers at be collect and spend them, you are still in a country that half the world want to come to.

Just relate staying in america and having to visit the vet in this country instead of a doctor, and you will get some idea about their health care and any other service they have to pay for

Goverments will always rake in the windfalls like this to shore up the tax purses, but there will be a time it will come to a head, Oil $40 a barrel last year $140 a barrel last week, just get ready to tighten the belts as we will all feel the pinch shortly :-/

you are absolutely right about everything dovescot...all i'm trying to point out (and it is a 'guestimate') is that at 1-30/l the oil company gets 60p, the govt. gets 60p (duty) and a further 10p vat (roughly) so even now the oil companies/retailers are not getting 50% of the pump price. ( i don't work for the oil industry)

I totally agree with you but the goverments will be hard pushed to change it, they will always coin in on the tax windfall, and the greens will say it is good for the enviroment as more people will use their cars less aiding climate control, also on the american front standard cars are about 3.5 litre, the Bronco i had use of was 6.5 litre petrol, 7mpg :-/

I work for myself and the price of wood had almost doubled as well :'(
