Guest geordiejen Posted March 25, 2013 Report Posted March 25, 2013 weather experts seem to think this could be the norm at this time of year, has anyone had any difficulties during the breeding season.had my first clutch of ybs ready to put on the loft but the wind at the weekend gave me second thoughts.difficult to spend the time out with the birds and although they have warm feathers to keep them warm i was a couple of hours the other night although the loft is pretty well protected from north winds, the gale was coming from the east and i could feel it whirling through from the roof vents.pretty tough on the squeekers still in the nest but touch wood no casualties.looking forward to getting these youngins out but not going to rush them.
andy Burgess Posted March 25, 2013 Report Posted March 25, 2013 i think we will just have to get on with it ,cold East winds have been predicted for the next decade

Guest Gareth Rankin Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 i think we will just have to get on with it ,cold East winds have been predicted for the next decade agree Andy, were fortunate in Scotland that we are starting 20th April which is 2 weeks behind many organisations from the rest of the UK, last year the feds were having to liberate pigeons when it was only 5 degrees and the racing wasn't any worse than any other year.

That would have depended on how the wind direction related to the flight path.We liberated in 5 degrees into a head wind and the racing was pretty poor. Most sensible fanciers kept their birds in the loft.
Guest IB Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 We too start racing on 20th April and judging by snow yet again this morning, I don't see it happening. I've felt that April for Scotland has been cold for a number of years now and that racing should be pushed back to start in May at earliest. Last year was one of the worst on record for losses, and the norm was cold northerlies. We pushed our YB racing back a week too as weather in July 2012 stopped training. Major re-think needed.
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 From 2006-2011 the best weather we had in those years was April and May, The seasons short enough without cutting it any shorter, so let the fanciers that want to send there pigeons do so, for those that want to wrap them up in cotton wool and wait for perfect conditions, then they can also have this choice.Personally only 50% of my own pigeons will be at the 1st 2 races the other 50% wrapped in cotton wool ....lol will go straight into the 3rd or 4th race.

Guest homestead Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 Our first race was 6th April and i've heard about a meeting to put racing back a few weeks same as last year. I dont think its a case of wrapping them in cotton wool but time to start thinking European regarding sending young and old birds to the same race, no more wasted hens send with the young bids. That would stop us having tight time lines to work to and possble to devide 1 race into 3 overall winner, fastest hen, cock ect just idea's but i'm sure the way forward. The amount of birds that dont get tested ??? it worth a thought......Regards Les
