Cock Not Filling His Eggs

Recommended Posts

Late 2010 i bought a 2003 stock cock, I only bought him because he was cheap enough for what he was, He's a son of a cock whats had a lot of 1st's and topped the fed a good few times. I bred two yb's from him in 2011, raced them, Lost one 2012 i paired him up and he didn't fill his 1st round, Wasn't to fussed because i had more than enough ybs, As the old bird season got on its way, the only young cock i had from him went on to fly well, And get a few cards, including 3rd club, 4th fed getting beat my me only been to slow with the clock!

This year, He's sitting and looking at the eggs id say that they was clear again. can anything be done with him or is his breeding life over? cheers, Andy :)

pluck round his vent

and trim his tail down to 2 inches

do the same with his hen if shes only a stock hen

the oldboy might not be agile enough to copulate properly

and triming the tails make his job easier

trimming round the vent clears the way better

at 10 he should be still ok for breeding

Thank you, I will give that a try. Then hen is a stock bird two, But she's only a 2011 bird but ill look at them, I have older cocks in stock loft, oldest cock been 1997 and he filled and reared two eggs last year!

also is his tail long??

if so ...cut an inch or so off it

i had the same problem,with a 03 soontjen a double grandson of 601

a very good flyer told me to do both,ie clip the feathers around the vent.

hope this helps

next step viagra :)

Thank you, I appreciate it, Ill do it tomorrow! :)

Haha yeah, It'd be alright if we could use on old birds! XD

He could also be overweight chances are if paired in April he'd fill, I'd cut the feathers around his vent even let him be a foster for one round it all helps

Maybe, just haven't had a problem before with pairing up at this time, i will keep trying him and hopefully get a round of him. I might put something out of race loft under him for now and let him rear but would just love a yb or two from him :)

We had a 16 year old cock who struggled to fill his eggs so we trimmed his vent and locked him away in a large nestbox with his hen untill she laid. Both eggs were full, also dont forget testicles skrink in cold weather as well. Give him time.

I have a 7 year old van reet hen who is probably one of the best van reet breeding hens in the uk and last year she only laid one egg so hoping his season she can produce some.

hi mate have you candled the eggs to check they are clear, sometimes when the veins are showing(4 days) the eggs look fertile and it can stop development and go back to looking like a clear egg.other things to try is to change the mating or switch the eggs.some cocks can be terrible sitters especially if ther is unpaired cocks in the section.they spend too much time chasing other birds from the nestsite and the eggs chill.

Hi have checked that, I just had a quick look and they didn't look full, i had 6 pair lay on same day so ill wait til they have all hatched, if the mentioned cocks dont hatch a within a few days after ill let him go back down now i have took some of the above advise. The stock loft is equal pairs, He's a good sitter i think just no good at filling eggs :P

Thanks for your reply though :)

he is on his last legs only hope would be wait to weather warms up a bit give him a course of vitamin E trim his and her vent feathers AND PLUCK OUT 6 out side tail feathers from her some time if you cut them, the cock finds it like a wire brush to part. only if they are both stock birds

I have already done the plucking of the feathers, Just giving the current eggs a chance in case they are full, I don't think he's on his last legs, Just maybe passed his breeding days, However even if this is the case he'll stop there, He's a good feeder and that always comes in handy :)

Thanks for the advise, Andy.

hi mate you can also try a calcium suppelment, ive read that calcium is passed onto the hen from the cock bird during mating.maybe the calcium might help him produce more tadpoles.was there by any chance any blood on the shell of the egg or any roughness on the egg?

cheers, Again ill give it a try ;) and no the egg was snow white, Andy

If he is worth the wait then it is also advisable to leave him alone until the weather gets a bit warmer before you look at pairing him back up.

Stick a half smarty over his throat for a couple of days before you re-pair him B)

might be worth a go, wouldn't mind just getting two ybs this year and keeping old of them as i know they are good blood :) Thanks, Andy
