Double00 Posted November 1, 2012 Report Posted November 1, 2012 My birds have flown through the moult. nearly complete but today i have a young hen and a yearling cock looking very sick, wings down, feathers puffed out and not eatn, these birds have not been out for 2 months and have been a picture of health till today, i read somewhere that the moult can trigger parathyfoid? dont want to discard of these birds so some advise would be warmly welcomed, thank you.
greenlands Posted November 1, 2012 Report Posted November 1, 2012 Can mice gain access to the drinker/feed,if so I would suspect mice droppings/p**s that are causing the prob.
Guest geordiejen Posted November 1, 2012 Report Posted November 1, 2012 no mate the moult shouldnt trigger anything but all i can say is when the birds are at there heaviest in the moult they are vulnarable to pick up things as the immune system can be weakened.remove all sick birds from the section and dont mix the sick ones with any others.
old owl Posted November 1, 2012 Report Posted November 1, 2012 would check for mice could be salmonella
Guest Owen Posted November 1, 2012 Report Posted November 1, 2012 It is obvious that these birds are very sick and it will be nothing to do with the moult. If I were you I would carry out all the normal checks. Throat and crop swabs and droppings test. If this does not find a problem I would consult a Vet to have the blood tested for paratyphoid. The Lab test is important because they can carry out sensitivity tests at the same time. Sensitivity tests will tell you which antibiotic will kill the bacteria.Regardless of whether or not vermin can get into your loft I think that setting up at least one bait station is wise.Check the grain you are feeding just in case it is contaminated either from before you got it and after. At the end of the day the best help you can get is from an good Avian Vet.
