I've not really bothered to read this, but opened up at the question how far is it across the channel. Then I read my mate Roly taking some stick, when in my opinion he is spot on. The North road out of Lerwick is far more difficult than any of the National south road races other than the Irish but the Irish and I'll stand corrected no longer fly the long distance, i.e. a race of 550+ miles.

When you fly south road up the east coast you only have 20 mile of water to clear at Dover, when you fly Lerwick, the birds tend to fly over 200 mile of water befroe hiting the mainland and if they are flying to the west of the country always into a headwind and a partial headwind to the east. On the south road you tend to have a tail wind.

BUT lets put this in perspective that does not make the North Road flyers better than the south road flyers e.g. the competition in the UNC is phenomenal, 28000 doesn't compare to 4000 of the NRCC. As did nothing compare to the old Welsh North Road Fed (remember a fed not a combine) who in my first ever race liberated 28,000 YB from 60 miles.

Eveyone wants to claim that their area is harder than everyone else, it is an arguement that can't be sustained, I have flown in three completley different areas and they each have their own diferent difficulties. Whereever you live you can only beat the local opposition; and for me the best way to test yourself is in National competition and to perform well in your section/region on a consistent basis.

But I will say in my opinion there is absolutley no question North from Lerwick is the toughest for a pigeon (except for a 600 mile equivalent in to Ireland)

I am interested to here peoples views on this topic. When I flew in N London, I flew north up to Lerwick. Now living in Norfolk I am in a North Road club, but seriously considering turning South, as it is one Challenge I have never taken on.

Going back to the beggining of the thread  a lot of articles are dribble, you get to know whats worth reading and whats not!

Should we realy though be pulling a fancier appart for what is his opinion, and we all have one, on a forum that i don't think he belongs to giving him no chance to reply and put his side?

thats a very good question ? i've only ever flown north...but my clubmates have flown north & south. the puzzling bit is that they reckon the north is harder to fly but then again one of the reasons they turned was because of the losses incurred on the south...contradictory. my own view is that i would rather have a slight headwind that the pigeons have to work into but giving them time to 'think' of the line rather than a 'blow home' in which, if they make a mistake, they are carried a long way of course. perhaps this explains it ?.....i don't know. here in norfolk we have 'the wash' in the way...if we're talking water...but i don't think they cross it very often preffering to work round. i havn't seen TH's comments but if true i think them very unhelpful to the fancy. its like promoting elitism..ie only distance counts...when IMO it doesn't matter how/what you do in our hobby you are welcome

Which ever Rd you fly, your competetors are also flying the same.... well mostly. yes we see and accept the East invariably has the edge, and the farther in the East  the better of course.

But in most clubs  / even Fed the compition is fierce and you have to be upto the mark.

Never mind crap scenarios regards being more keen, getting up ealier or whatever to steal a march, your competitors, the good ones are already with or ahead of you.

We can't control or harness the wind.... Adjust our sail a little tops...
