Guest geordiejen Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 i have a youngster thats ready to leave the nest and i noticed that it only walks a short while then lies down again.i checked the joints and found no lumps but it seems to me the toes look a bit swollen.feet feel quite warm as well.
eastcoaster Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 Sounds like bumble foot m8There`s not much you don`t know del , have a stock bird that gets this every year Henk De Weerd told me it has no affect on them in the future.
Delboy Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 Usually happens to birds of prey Colin but ive experienced it in pigeons, slight bacterial infection causes it but nothing to worry about.
Guest geordiejen Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 do i need to give it antibiotics or will it clear by itself.
Delboy Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 If it is bumble foot, baytril alone won't cure it. The wound will need to be opened the pus cleaned out. Bird pus is different from the kind of pus we get with a wound...bird pus is thick like cottage cheese. It doesn't just come to a head and flow out. The foot may need to be cleaned out several times while the bird is on baytril. As odd as it seems, most don't understand that about bird pus and it seems the vet doesn't either. Find yourself a vet that understands birds and hopefully this one will be okay.
Guest geordiejen Posted June 24, 2012 Report Posted June 24, 2012 cheers guys i will leave the bird for now and see if it will clear up by itself.
