Roland Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Reminds me of November 1967 gosh. I was having my nineth fight. It was at Leicester Belgrave club, and I fought Fred liney the local hero. He'd beaten me before in my fifth fight... They DIMMED the lights and gave him a fanfare entry -after keeping me waiting 10 minutes in the ring - this time. Then they presented him with cups etc.and spouted about him being Schoolboy / Junior ABA champion and how great he was, ranted about his Midland titles etc. etc. BEFORE the fight!... I then went out and clobber him big time lol. Think I must have read the wrong script. The one where I was suppose to lose lol. They threw everything bar the kitchen sink into the ring. My trainer was fighting in the ring, which soon had many of us fighting in there too lol (They would have thrown that kitchen sink too if poss I bet lol). THERe was fighting every where. I got surrounded by boxersand trainers etc. and somehow got out and dragged into the changing rooms. After I got dressed I was off going back down stairs to the ring, when I was pulled back in and asked where I was going? I told them to collect my prize!!! They brought them up and I chose three. THEN I went back down lol and walked the guallent lol. I always picked 3 prizes before the fights there there after and mostly topped the bill.I fought Fred again 3 weeks later at Mkt Harbourer where the atmosphere was split in two. One side the Leicester Crowd, the other Kettering / Corby etc. I won again even more convincetly. Then again 2 years later at Thurmaston leicester (Again) when my club mate Don Carr beat their' local Johnny Allen. They had three fights and all wwere brutal streets scraping affairs lol. The Ref got fed up trying to control them and just rested on the ropes and let them get on with it!. He wouldn't have dared stop it, and the seconds parted them at the bells lol. Don carr my club mate won them all ...but we did have a great scrape that night too in the crowded WMC. I bet that club still remembers it lol. Johnny and Don became great mates and had tremedous respect for each other. Don't think any of their fights were 'Boxing Matches' to say the least ... But great to watch lol. Then at Manor Baths London ... But I DIVERSE lol.
just ask me Posted February 20, 2012 Author Report Posted February 20, 2012 sounds like you had a hectic few nights lol
Roland Posted February 20, 2012 Report Posted February 20, 2012 I remember seeing Johnny 'Gypsy' Frankham fighting Johnny Branch of Fritzroy Lodge at Bermonsey Baths London. The hall was split into two. Amospere could be cut with a knife. One side was the Gypsies and the other East Enders. All wearing suits etc. The Pikeys looking scuffy Smart lol. Les Stevens the good gypsy heavy wieght was also on. I went up into the belcony and decided to spinkle the Pikeys with Bread crumbs and bombed them with balls of Tin Foil ... then stood back unseen. Then did the same to the other lot. They were getting mad to say the least when Ray Mackness - Our Heavy weight collared me and took me to the front of the Belcony and told all and sundry it was me pelting them lol. Was about 18 then and didn't really give a damm like lol. Mind I had to step lightly the rest of the night like. But I certainly got the rival gangs at it.
