I notice that this incident occurred yesterday yet no comment on it from RSPB, or anybody else. Bloody strange that in all previous cases of a BBC report of a BoP being attacked, there's all sorts of comments of the 'poor wee hawk' ilk, usually led by BBC and its RSBP pals. Here we have silence. BBC obviously stands for Bloody Biased Comments.

Excellent letter in today`s Herald about the increasing numbers of Sea Eagles and their lack of natural prey ,large fish e.g. ling and cod and their increasing dependence on cattle, sheep (lambs) and deer. The RSPB by introducing this one species is endangering the survival of many of our existing sea birds and waders. The RSPB claims that sea eagles are boosting Mull`s economy by 5 million pounds per annum but remain curiously silent when asked for more information on their claim

Although feel sorry for the pensioner , this is actually good news as more and more people will see bops for what they are , them trying to attack a dog shows that there is a lack of suitable prey for them so hopefully a nice harsh winter may knock more than a few of them out :)

most likely a gos hawk or some sort of half bred that got out on a falconer the fact that did not seem to be to afraid of humans it must be some sort of hand reared bird that got released or got out on some one this is the problem with imprinted birds there not afraid of humans the next one may be a small child as to a big hawk there is no difference if imprinted in this case though i would not think its any bigger than a gos gawk as something like a eagle owl would have killed it in 5 seconds :emoticon-0138-thinking:

be interesting on what the few falconry boys on site think i think this bird must have some sort of human contact :emoticon-0138-thinking:

I think it's more of a case of hunger , rapidly depleting loss of small prey in the area , but I wouldn't rule out a captive bird that's been released or escaped :)

They lock on to prey nothing else would concern it when hunger calls ;)

never heard of a hawk chasing a pigeon man around a garden after getting a half killed bird :emoticon-0138-thinking:

very true , I chased a spar of from a blackbird I was unsuccessful she just picked it back up flew a bit further where it was safer , must of been some size to pick the dog up , but flew in to house seems to point towards a tame bird

The year was 1999. I opened the kitchen door and on the lawn a female sparrowhawk was on top of one of my pigeons, I ran toward it and it flew onto my perimeter fence and I picked up my still living pigeon watching the hawk all the time. As I was inspecting her the hawk took flight directly at me and I accidentally broke its neck when attempting to ward it off. DONT THINK FOR ONE MOMENT THEY WONT ATTACK YOU.

your not far off mate my guess is an imprint and they do not have fear of humans.imprints are ok if you know what you are doing but a gos imprint or any large imprint bop can be dangerous and when on a kill can attack the falconer to protect its kill just as it would one of its own kind.people have lost eyes in this way.wild birds of prey have a great respect for humans and will keep well out of your way.there is a lot of egg pulling going on in falconry breeding and also AI where eggs are hatched in incubators and creche reared or single reared ie imprints, its a good way of producing more birds and is done for the more expensive falcons gos etc,in AI the birds are hand reared so when they are at breeding age the males will copulate on a dummy and you collet sperm, and the females will squat for you to inseminate bit more to it than that but just a general idea.
