I am currently thinking of going on to widowhood next year my question is I have a 12x6 old bird loft what i was thinking about doing is splitting a 12x6 into 8x6 for the widowhood cocks and 4x6 for the hens my question is how many widow cocks would be comfortable in a 8x6 section and is the 4x6 okay for the hens?

I have a another 12x6 for young birds and corn store etc

that is exactly the dimensions of my widowhood team, and I race 12 cocks from the 8x6 section and house the 12 hens in boxes in the 4x6 section.http://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0137-clapping.gif

I race 12 cocks from an 8 by 6 loft. Hens are in a 4 foot section.

Ask 10 fanciers you get 10 different systems, personally i wouldnt like my hens next to my cocks unless i had a radio playing all day and all night. I've had it before, and the cocks never exercised how they should have.

young birds wont make any differnce if they find out where the hens are forget about it your finished on widowhood

my advice would be if they do basket hens and let cocks in and out of loft to let them know hens are gone if they think there still there they wont fly and one rouge cock will stop the rest

Your space will give you room for 12 cocks. I lock mine in their boxes and feed and water them in pots. This prevents bullying and they will sprint better this way. It also allows me to select which bird has what food so that I can send individual cocks well prepared and keep the others on a lower plain of nutrition until I am ready for them. I also have an aviary for the hens which has a mesh floor. This helps to reduce the pairing up and allows them a more natural life. The hens are put into boxes from Wednesday on. When the cocks get used to the system I feed them all they want before they go out to exercise and empty the pots while they are out. I usually lock them out for about and hour and leave the loft because they will hang about if they see you. This way they will fly really well and you will have no trouble getting them fit.
