some advice is needed from you guys please , im a new flyer this season i have been helping a local flyer daily, training old then young birds ,going the club helping out there too, just taking everything in and learning all i can ,my plan is to start flying young birds next season ,i have converted a shed into a smart 8x8 loft , i have a total of 11 YBs , 6 of these are apparently van reets that are not settled to my place ,im going to put them to stock to start my family for next season ,the other 5 birds are flying round loft and trained to 30 mile , then from this will have an old bird team the season after that , my question is that right next to the 8x8 loft i now have the space and the frame work for 10x5 foot x 6 foot high loft with a passage way between the other loft , so im thinking of splitting this 10x5 into 2 sections , one for 4 pairs of stock birds 5x4x6 high , and 5x6x6 high for 25 YBs next season , then the 8x8x6 high for 8 pairs of OBs on natural or a partition for roundabout , my explanation probably makes it sound complicated when really all im asking is have i enough room for my plans ???

sounds ok mate but the 4 pairs of stock wont need that much room mate

i would split the 10ft into a 3 1/2 ft by 6 1/2 ft

as stock dont need as much room especially for a 4 pairs the 3 1/2 would be plenty full for the 4 pairs

get the ventilation right at the start and it will be great

I'd go along with this, I'd also suggest you have a small aviary built onto the stock bird section.

The most important thing about a pigeon loft is the efficiency or otherwise of the ventilation. There has to be a continual current of air rising up through the loft. Not a draft which is a current of cold air traveling through hot air. You have to remember that birds have a very differant repiritory system than mamals like us and they can not handle lack of oxygen. More often than not the pigeons will tell you when you have it wrong because you will see dirty nostrils, one eyed cold and other symptoms of poor ventilation. When you come to race your birds you will find that the losses will leave you with a certain number year after year. This is the number that works for your particular loft. The sensible thing for you to do is to keep the numbers to the sort of numbers you are left with after you have raced. If you can do that you will find that your birds will give you the best results they can depending on their ability as racers. A good loft design can be seen on Red Rose Lofts on the internet it incorporates all the features that a good loft should have. I made one and it is really good. Mine is 16'x6' which handles 40 odd youngsters with ease.
