just ask me Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 just reading a lot of reports around Europe latelly on big winners flying the distance there seems to be more and more sprint to middle distance blood in these birds in the winners or am i just dreaming
OLDYELLOW Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Yes but sprint racing became more prominent after the war where most of the birds they kept were distance birds so guess although the quickest were used to breed quicker birds they still would of had the ability to race further , i guess feeding techniques change and more so called sprint / middle distance birds fly further , theres many strains that have just done that look at Janssens they only flew there birds so far as deemed them to valuable to push them further although they will win at any distance , another strain of the 70's the Bricoux's Albert marselles hidden pair were bricoux and there blood was still prominent in his sprinters I think a lot is how there set up and fed

Roland Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 They old adage and plain sense is same as always ... 'One can get distance birds to sprint, but not sprint birds to do the distance'! All good families, regardless of distance in mind are, and have been, from proven distance stock
just ask me Posted August 9, 2011 Author Report Posted August 9, 2011 staff van reets regulary win at 500 mile plus and looking at winners on the continent there a lot of sprint and middle distance blood in them also was reading somewhere birds in the top 10 of a irish national from thruso a real tough fly were sprint birds
Roland Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 One must also note that the noon libs were in aid of so - called 'Distance birds. This enabled sprint / middle distance bird to win and then be classed as a distance bird - as the race was (for the longer and genuine fdistance flyers) a distance race. Enabing them all to all be held up at the coast / water being too late to cross and then nipping over the water first light to win. Genuine distance birds had to warm up and then flys 100's of miles further in a different (often colder especially flying over the cooler air of the channel)and supposedly better and faster still than the birds in their lofts. - A tail WIND IN IT'S RARITY MAY HAVE HELPED! May then flew less than 350 miles. Enough said eh! To me a distance bird is to start at 550 miles + and have a early start with every chance given to home on the day. JMO
