Guest IB Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 On race days like wot we have been having recently, north winds, cold, rain etc, mine come home to honey in the drinking water. I picked up a tip in BHW from one of the scribes who suffers from arthritis and he recommended a drink for fellow sufferers to ease aches & pains - a teacup of hot water with a teaspoonful of cider vinegar in it, then dissolve a tablespoonful of honey in that. And then drink it. He reckoned the cider vinegar helped dissolve the honey in the water. And he assured readers that it does ease aches & pains. Honey also contains glucose which together with plain water help rehydrate the pigeon quicker, and gives it a bit of a lift. If adding cider vinegar helps eases any skeletal or muscular pain too, then IMO that's an added bonus. So I adapted the Scribes recipe to half litre of boiled water, add a teaspoonful of cider vinegar (5ml) stir, then stir in a tablespoon (10ml) of honey till dissolved. Top up with cold tap water to drinker capacity or 3 litres maximum Spent quite some time in Asda looking at jars of honey. Always chose one that flows in the jar when jar is tilted. Tried a few, my current is Australian Eucalytus Honey. There is a New Zealand one, Makuma? (spelling) but its more than twice the cost of the others, and so far I have passed that one up. I also keep mine refrigerated.

WHITTY Posted June 7, 2011 Report Posted June 7, 2011 I USE HONEY TWICE A WEEK BUT I DONT USE HOT WATER TO DISOLVE IT AS I READ SOMEWHERE THAT HOT WATER KILLS SOME OF THE INGREDIENTS IN IT SO I ALWAYS USE COLD WATER TAKES A LITTLE BIT LONGER TO DISOLVE BUT GET MORE GOODNESS OUT OF IT I USE GARLIC WITH IT AN CIDER VINEGAR DOSAGE I USE ONE TABLE SPOON TO 2 PINTS OF WATER JUST MY OPINION
JohnQuinn Posted June 7, 2011 Report Posted June 7, 2011 The New Zealand honey IB refers to is MANUKA HONEY. This is used to heal open wounds or sores, seen a story about a man who after surgery found his wound would not heal, 18 months the Docs tried to close it but to no avail, then they tried MANUKA honey on his leg and it healed completely in 6 weeks.
OLDYELLOW Posted June 7, 2011 Report Posted June 7, 2011 Have you tried DMGI used it many years ago , made no real difference to birds other than my wallet was lighter
