The charity Songbird Survival is to provide £88,000 worth of funding to the Game and Conservation Wildlife Trust (GCWT) to carry out research on two rural sites. GCWT, formerly known as the Game Conservancy Trust, will carry out a two-year study on four pairs of farmland sites in the UK. The researchers will count the songbirds and then cull the predators, including corvids, from half the sites to measure the effects on the songbird population. Songbird Survival’s principal trustee and spokesman is Viscount Coke, whose father owns a major game-shooting centre in Norfolk – the Holkham estate. The Queen’s personal donation was made to Songbird Survival, but a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said: “There was no significance in the donation.†RSPB campaigns manager, Andre Farrar commented: “Songbird Survival is an interesting outfit. Having started out being negative and consistently critical about what the RSPB says, their editorial content has become more sophisticated. We welcome their recent move to commission some high quality science. What they do with it, we will see.†Nick Forde, a trustee of Songbird Survival, said: “There are lots of factors causing the decline of farmland birds, but to say it is only habitat loss and farming methods is misleading. The environmental grants for farmers are turning farms into a paradise for songbirds, but they are also turning them into a paradise for predators.†A spokesperson for DEFRA said: “Control of crows and magpies can be conducted under general licence. DEFRA has not given approval for any research into raptors.†This story will appear in February 9 issue on sale Wednesday. 1 Response to “Charity cash support for corvid cullâ€Feed for this Entry -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- david February 11, 2011 at 4:24 pm this has to be wrong, the birds are doing well because of human activity,a cull, especially with poison and with money from charity is even worse. It just go to show when you donate to charity you dont know where your money is going or how its is going to be used. « What a picture!Quote of the week »Comments are currently closed.« What a picture!Quote of the week »--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Search for: PagesSubscribe Newsletter Add Your Classified About Us Contact Us CategoriesAsk the Experts Editors Letters General News Next Issue Nick's Blog Pictures Quote of the week Readers' Gallery This Week What a picture!
