Guest geordiejen Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 hi guys two of my hens have been killed and eaten by a hen sparrowhawk today.one around lunchtime and another a couple of hours later.didnt see it happen but around 4 o'clock i seen a hen sparrowhawk come out from a neighbours garden and cleaning its beak on a tree branch.went out to the back lane and saw lots of feathers in the neighbours garden.all it left was wings and feathers.made a right mess of the garden as well so im expecting a knock at the door when they see the mess.neighbours hate the pigeons and this is throwing fuel to the fire.ive been told the hens go down to nest at the end of the month.

Guest geordiejen Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 its a total bummer mate.we can do nothing about it but shoo them away.im glad my breeding birds dont get out right now or it would have been worse.
gulkie Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 sorry for your loss but its unusual for the same bird to kill twice in the same daycould be two different bop's
hawked again Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Aye we're all in the same boat. I lost another one to the hen sparrowhawk today. Builders working two doors down rescued the doo but thought it was better to kill the doo quickly than leave it to suffer any longer. That's 7 she's had in about 3 weeks.
Guest IB Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Yes, same reports coming in from different parts of our Fed too.
hawked again Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 I'd love to be able to tell you the weight of a hen sparrowhawk's head, in grams, but I haven't a clue. Does anybody know?
Fly_caster Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Plenty posted here and elsewhere about how to stop the carnage - talking about it for anything other than interest reasons is utterly futile. Horible thing to happen but it can be stopped - relatively easily - just needs a will ! Cheers, Steve
cemetary Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 sorry for your loss but its unusual for the same bird to kill twice in the same daycould be two different bop's It has been reported that the same hen has struck the same loft twice within a matter of minutes,
Guest geordiejen Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 ive been told hen sparrowhawks go into overdrive with the killing as they know they will be going down on eggs soon and feed themselves as much as they can.i know the hens brood the eggs and young only the cock birds go out hunting during this time.fecking pain in the *expletive removed*.

Guest bluemorning Posted March 15, 2011 Report Posted March 15, 2011 not the same spar if it has had a full crop off the first kill, she would be to heavy to catch pigeons with full crop.sorry but you could have one of last years young female spars to cope with as well.good luck mate
