Albear Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 Hi I've had a nightmare the past three weeks with computer infections, what makes it worse is that I have a new PC about 8 weks old and have had to have the disc reformatted and rstored and the laptop has had a scam pop up on it which transferred to the PC. A scam popup is where you get a pop up on your machine telling you you have lots of virus that need removing and to click on the link to do so, my link took me to total security which said if you paid £60 for the software it would remove the problems. Which of course was just a scam. However I was well peed off cause it had got through Mcafee and Mcafee told me I would have to pay to have it removed even though i was a subsciber. The upshot was I did and upgraded for 'total protection'. Mcafee told me it was because I was going on dodgy sites. When I finish a session I completley clean my machine, cache, history, registry so hopefully there's nothing lurking! This popup appeared twice on my machine. The first time was when I'd been into chat, elimar & basics and the second time when I'd beeen in to basics and elimar. This week I pmd admin (vallance) and asked if the site would check its security, in case of any vulnerability. He replied to me by saying he'd got a scam popup on Elimar, Id'd not mentioned to him I'd been on there. Also that he would let Richard know because he deals with site security. So I would just like to advise be wary going on elimar. I will e mail Les to make him aware of my post, so he too can check his security. Hopefully Richard is cheking baiscs!
greenlands Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 Now that you've mentined it,I also got the pop up off Elimar/basics about two week ago but I cancelled it right away, done a scan and everything was ok.I think I put a post on here somewhere,I probably need a head scan one or two things getting through that shouldn't Lindsay.
Elvan Willgrass Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 Change to Linux OS, I did four years ago and no more viruses.
Timo Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 Change to Linux OS, I did four years ago and no more viruses. I also use Linux (Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/ ) for some years now, and I will never go back to Windows. It feels good to just use your computer without the fear of getting virusses and malware.
Guest strapper Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 if you get a pop up for a virus security and it starts running... shut off your pc by the button..do not shut it down as you would do normally..as this could store any virus onto your machine. i have had this on a few occasions scanning the web for info on medications and illnesses of birds. hope you have it sorted now aln m8.

Yes thanks Paul but pretty peed off. I've been on the internet at home since 1996 have tried every anti virus on the market until probably a year ago. I came to the conclusion Macafee was best, but in the spring I thought I'd try one care from windows when my ncafee expired. I did and didn't like it, two weeks after not renewing mcafee offered me a renewal at £20 instead of £50, so decided to take it, what I didn't notice was it had reduced functionality and that's how I got stung. I'm back with Macfee fully now. I would say free ones are excellent value, however I have 9 years of pictures from my son's birth to now on the machine, I have them backed up too but they are precious so I try and cover it everyway. My ony adverse impression of free ones is the amount of spyware they put on your machine other than that they do what the tin says imo.
