I remove the drinkers when I lock the birds up,they drink very little this time of year so I don't think it bothers them too much. They are replaced about 08:00 >> 08:30 the following morning,if they freeze through the day I top up with a little warm water.

Sure I remember reading that birds can suffer from dehydration it cold conditions, due to them generating a lot of heat trying to keep warm? If that’s the case might need the water?

For the normal type drinkers just fill a container with salt water (sea water best) and heat in microwave for 1 min, then put a lid on it (with foil under lid) then submerge in drinker.

You can also try using beach peebles, they will stop it freezing too, especially the granite ones. Best to warm them through first, but not to hot if in plastic drinker!
