rasbull Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Hi, I am not sure what to do regarding my loft. Here is a pic of the loft. The part sticking out is 6 x 6, although only 3ft of that is sticking out. It has a vent on the front and also has a soffit vent along the top (white). Since this pic was taken I have put the window of the 6 x 6 loft on hinges. which when closed leaves a 6 inch gap at the bottom so the air can circulate. So its a triangle shape from top to bottom of the window. I now have the option of opening the window and hooking onto the roof overhang. I would like to know peoples opinions regarding the ventilation of my loft. Firstly do I have enough with what I have. Secondly what should I do regarding the window? Would people leave the window open fully at all times to increase air flow, but close if rain is driving in that direction? Oer close the window and just allow the gap to provide the air flow? The window however is about 3 ft x 3ft so is that to much of a gap? I have been also been leaving the main door open at night to increase air flow, but I have been closing the window? I have seen some lofts with nothing except wire mess on the front, Is this a good idea? I dont know! What are your opinions regarding this?
pjc Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 you need air flow to keep the air in the loft constantly changeing. Idealy you need air coming in near the floor at the front of the loft and exhausting at the top in the back of the loft to give you a basic airflow.
rasbull Posted March 5, 2009 Author Report Posted March 5, 2009 All mine see is at that front with the window the air vent and then the soffit on the side. I have nothing at the back. I dont know what to do for the best?
pjc Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 can you make a gap at the back just below roof level?
Guest bigda Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 keep your door closed at night if you have to open it make sure the wire mesh door is 1/2x1/2 square mess to keep mice out the window would be fine as to use in the summertime, closing it will help the air circulation during the day as the sun warms the shed up, your loft is looking nice and tidy mate

Guest bigda Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 get 6 = 3" vent plastic circle type then get a core cutter and along the top at the back space drill them out
rasbull Posted March 5, 2009 Author Report Posted March 5, 2009 Yeah I did consider doing this. I think this would help. Regarding the window would you leave that open at all times other than raining or closed at all times?
walterbmasson Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 rasbull watch your birds they themselves will tell you when every thing is all right dont hammer and change things at this time of year unless the birds tell you keep a close watch till you are satisfied make sure no draughts i my self likes plenty ventilation with a 12 inch rotating fan in middle of loft in corridor which goes 24-7 8) 8) 8)
greenlands Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Here's an idea I came up with.Wire mesh sliding door behind the main door, two wedges cut to whatever lenght you want, mine's about 9inch x 2inch at the thick end.Remove the perspex from the door and cut about 7inch off and refit, fit a piece to the wedges.Lindsay click pic to enlarge.
