ally mac Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 New loft should go up next week. It will be 24 x 9 ft. I am planning a 3 ft corridor along the front. Any advice on section sizes would be appreciated as I am gooing to fit it out myself. Al.
little sam Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 I WOULD HAVE 4 SECTIONS THAT WOULD BE 5 X 6 FOOT AND THEN THE 4 X 6 THATS LEFT AS A CORN/BASKET STORE
steve Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 I WOULD HAVE 4 SECTIONS THAT WOULD BE 5 X 6 FOOT AND THEN THE 4 X 6 THATS LEFT AS A CORN/BASKET STORE depends what your needs are ally mac methods you fly etc
ally mac Posted November 25, 2008 Author Report Posted November 25, 2008 Im planning to fly widowhood, I think, it will be my first year so have a lot to learn, feel free to point me in the right direction. Al.
steve Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 maybe best to build each section to fit your boxes (no gaps in between that way) example if you make a section 8 foot and your boxes are only 30 inch x 3 sets = 90 inches thats 6 inch waste and means boxing in so if you have 2 sections like that with 3 sets of boxes in each and a young bird section by making the section fit the boxes means you get approx 1 foot extra in your y/bird section hope this makes sense
GREENGRASS Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 ally make sure you know what size nest boxes you are going to use before deciding on section sizes no point in wasting any space.
ally mac Posted November 25, 2008 Author Report Posted November 25, 2008 I have my nest boxes already, 3 sets of 3 at 30.5". It would mean a 7.5 ft long section for stock so I was thinking about putting it across one end to make the section narrower. More like 7.5 x 5 which would leave me 19ft x 9 to use for the remaining sections.

Guest Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 Ally the other consideration is whether you are having stock birds or not i.e. whether you want a stock bird section and if so how many nest boxes you need. If you don't as some don't, then you can have 3 sections. However you will need to breed YB for your first year which will mean a decision from: a) having stock, they could be l/b which you have broken which means you won't need a specific stock section because they aren't prisoners having old stock bought in which means you would require a stock section (don't know how you are off for birds but I still have two pairs surplus which I do not have room for , pure Hartogs, one a pair of l/b from Malone Bros only purchased a few months back both pair I would willingly give you free in consideration of the super job you did with Phoebe) c) You rely on donations of YB and again I would have thought there are many of us who admire what you did would happily breed you some YB , I for one would! Many will say don't complicate things for a new starter but if you have the time I would fly roundabout, it's very simple to do and you utilise all your birds, widowhood you lose the hens and cut down your race team by half. If you want to know a simple system that's easy to set up, you don't need sections to be the same as each other pm me. Time is the issue basiclly you need to be able to get your cocks out for 2 hours and your hens for 2 hours most days. I flew Widowhood last year because of time, but would have preferred to fly roundabout because I wouldn't be wasting some lovely hens. Hope I haven't messed your thoughts up!

Thats a kind offer I should have said I am actually okay for birds. I have 9 pairs for stock and 9 nest boxes. I also have 20 odd ybs trained out to 65 mile this year which I plan to select and race. As I am self employed I think widowhood would probably be the way to go though I do appreciated every ones thoughts. Al.
