Guest pigeonguy147 Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 is it worthwhile keeping prisoners as they are racing pigeons and should do as its stated on the can is it really worth the hassle keeping them locked up and deprived of their freedom or try to break them to the loft?
sapper756 Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 Personally I do not like having prisoners, but saying that I do have stock prisoners, this was due to buying mature birds for the stock loft. Now I tend to buy youngsters for the stock loft so that they can fly out. The one and only benefit of prisoners is, the BOP can not get at themhttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif My stock prisoners have ample room, and an aviary to access.
ritchie1 Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 all my stock pigeons none get out and they look really well picture of health so i dont see the piont in leting them out they are safe in the loft where no birds of prey can get at them and they have plenty of room where there at they are allways flying up and down all day so they get enough exercise doing that
Guest IB Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 I have never kept prisoner stock irrespective of age - I broke a 10 yo hen from a loft a few hundred yards away - and even birds that had broken a wing and unable to fly have had access to the garden , with me there watching of course. Always risk attached to any bird flying free, and 2 years ago 2 latebreds I bought in were lost off the top first time out, a few hundred pounds disappeared down the stank, but IMO thats a risk worth taking, as it's once only & is worth it for future peace of mind.
fletch Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 i always cut my stock birds down the first year then let them get there wing up in the next moult and try to break them in, some stay and some go, but at least i ave bred out of them

Guest youngboy Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 well i have 8 prisoners atmand have 2 more on the waybut the rest of my stock are all flying with me so it could be worse
JohnQuinn Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 I've only got 3 prisoners, 2 ck's and a hen i let out today for a bath and pick about the garden, she never took off which was ideal as the more she picks about the garden the better chance she will stay when she does strike up. The 2 Ck's have never flown out from any of their previous lofts so they will stay locked in until i breed from them next season, then they can suit themselves whether they stay or not. Always found good doos are easier broken and the one's that don't stay never leave anything worthwhile behind them. jmo
