pigeonpete Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 this is the pic ;D ;D cracking loft karl!!
wullie semple Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 im just building one smiler to this and it will cost me about 250 pound to build and about 1 weeks work it will be put up the end of this month karel you would have to be getting the wood cheap to build it for £250 there is no way you could build it for that if you paid the correct price for the material i would be asking for £250 just to build it
BLACK W F Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 it depends who you know i got a mate supplied best 3/4 ply 8x4 sheets for sweet fa also 4x2 3x2 2x2 felt and 1/2 ply for the boxes he would not take nothing but i made him take £50 for a drink and he still did not want that he even delivered to my door built aprox 22ftx 8 ft also 16ft x 4 ft stock loft dont get no better than that
david Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Be ever so cautious with Parkhall lofts !! I have one that constantly lets in from the roof . The mineral felt was put on by parkhall in the rain and it warped ..My loft gets soaking in the corners at either end of the loft .. It is 28ft X 8ft and cost me £2400.00 ...4 sections .. I am raising the loft , and having to re-roof it at the end of september . My corridor gets wetter every time it rains ..as more rain falls ,the felt gets more brittle . I have just had a 12x 6 stock shed and aviary erected with the help from friends from this forum and it's the dogs B******S. Cost me next to Now't and it is not an eyesore either ! You could spend a lot more sensible than go to these people and pay a fortune for something an ordinary man could build in a weekend for half a days wages .. Just my opinion. DAVID
Guest strapper Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 if your gonna have a loft thats dry then cover the felt with tin sheets/box profile even if 2nd hand, this will save you years of worry over the damp .dont think that felt is good enough...get it covered!!!.ive been in the building trade for many years and ive seen some horror stories with flat/sloping roof,s covered in felt. also treat the wood when you make the framework for the floor.

DAVID Thanks for that mate, just asked them for a quote and waiting on them to come back, it looks like they base their price on where you live as well. Don't have the time to build one or the space and with the weather stopping and starting it would take an age. Did you build the 12x6 yourself?
BLACK W F Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 jargre get some one to get you ply 8x4 sheets and a joiner he will put it up in a day cost you sweeties if you know the right guys
BLACK W F Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 i dont know whats wrong with most of you guys theres a credit crunch theres plenty good guys out of work goto the demolition sites youll get good deals on reclaimed timber try some of the gaffers on building sites most will do a deal theres joiners out of work they will biuld you a good loft for a few pounds straight cash speaks
stevebelbin Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Nothing better than building your own, mind I spent a fortune on mine, it probably would have been cheaper getting one from Parkhalls haha! Mine is just stood collecting dust and when I move out will probably be used as someone potting shed :-(!!

DAVID David the loft i had from was the same, when it rained my Ybs would bath in the flow of water!! The loft roof was so thin the felt nails went right thru and would not hold in. One of the other problems was i had to put it together myself, and the shed at the front was 2 inches too small so i had to put a bit of 2 x 2 under the roof to stop it sagging. How they have the cheek to put Alberts loft on their site amazes me the way he was treated! The guy was a total a-hole to deal with and put the phone down on me a couple of times, needless to say we had a great topic of conversation the next time in Blackpool, it cost him a few customers i think, but they had a lucky escape IMO.
Guest Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 jargre get some one to get you ply 8x4 sheets and a joiner he will put it up in a day cost you sweeties if you know the right guys Cheers Alun, going to get a costing of the materials today and see if the yard will cut boards to size as that's the biggest problem because lofts are on mountain side with no room for working. Can put them together easy enough but cutting them 8x4's isn't easy with no room. I know you can get tanalized wood from these yards which is pressure treated for rot so Strappers tip is not a worry, was also thinking of the corrugated fibreglass roofing as an option if I can get it.
Guest karl adams Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 some places will not cut tanalized timber as it causes health problems so can it cause harm to your birds :-/ :-/ :-/
Guest Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 some places will not cut tanalized timber as it causes health problems so can it cause harm to your birds :-/ :-/ :-/ Never knew that Karl, thanks, I'm off down the shed-makers now and going to do some work on what is best, I love the style of yours, its absolutely stunning, great joinery, awesome loft. Tell me, in your opinion what's the minimum width of aviary you'd put on a stock loft 12x6? Cheers.
BLACK W F Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 jargre be careful with the roof as that gear is good for the roof but i would put a timber roof on first and felt it as that stuff swets and condinsation

Guest Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 jargre be careful with the roof as that gear is good for the roof but i would put a timber roof on first and felt it as that stuff swets and condinsation Thanks Alun, just came from the local builders who said that could happen. I told them I wasn't happy with the grade of felt they use and they said they can upgrade that to green felt? Much thicker than the norm but dearer of course. That company mentioned above came back with an estimate and it was a grand and a bit just for a 12x6 twice as much as a local chippie firm will do it for, guess who I'll use. Thanks
Guest karl adams Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 the shed is made from 8x4 ply and it cost me 3 pound a sheet the 3x2 cls is from b and q and was 194 for 8ft but some of the 3x2 was with the ply i got . now the ply is 6 months old and come from a building yard :P
