Are You Happy With What Your Left With?

At the start of any young bird season we look at the birds we have bred and think god there are some beuties in this lot, unfortunitly we often have a different view come the end of the season when the scrag arses are left. The race basket can be hard but do we all believe its the only way to select? and are you happy with what the race basket has given you?

Personally i have 35 cocks left and on the whole im very pleased with there breeding, balance and type!!!!

personally I believe in the basket sorting the young birds out

The main thing bothering me is an imbalance between the sexes. For years I have been left with up to 8 more hens than cocks, don't know why. For the first time, I may have 4 more cocks and be over my nest box limit. And I've already made my selection and up to 2 days ago I thought I was left even-steven.

Started season with 66 ,ended with sixteen ,two of which are away to national tonight,

That was after two sticky races in shap fells ,Very happy with ones that are left,

They have raced out to 180 miles and faced hills .

If you live and race pigeons in this area you have to accept losses .

Aye, i've got to say i am pleased enough with what is there, i just hope they survive next year and mature into good 2yro's. Well most of them anyway!!

It would be too bad if i wasn't pleased

I am extremely happy with the ones that are still here. 6 birds have won a a total of 12 good Fed positions against an average of 5000 birds. And I sold 14 to a complete novice and they have won the young bird average. This guy has never had birds before and the only birds that he has are the ones from here. So in terms of quality, I am well chuffed. To be honest I can not wait to fly these birds as widowhood cocks next year.

started the season with 45 and have 35 left of which 10 have won prizes some multiple positions. Over the moon with what I have left they are cracking specimens. I think that as Ad Sherlackens says the secret is too breed a lot of youngsters and throughly test them. Breeding is a lottery and the more chances/tickets you have the better chance of breeding a winner. I like to cross for racing as I find the best birds to race are crosses.

I treat my young birds like spartans from the day they are born they are tested and the weak are disposed of. They then train hard and fight easy and it seems to leave the best at the end of the year.

As long as they go down the line to the YB National I'm happy even if they don't win a prize. Best YB's don't beccessary make the best old birds but as long as they are consisent and not last every week its all you need.

It will be hard to make my selection as OB birds came well so have 10 cocks to take leaving 10 good cocks that will have to go

I'm like you Stuart short of YB hens this year and to be honest I will have to keep them all even though there are two that are crap that I would normally reject as not suitable for my race team as they are a mile back each week
