Due to young bird sickness, my youngsters only had 1 race so far this season some none at all just got them going again but I now have to either jump the all to 170 miles or one of the old timers said about putting them on with the local trainer for the last 3 weeks (50mile toss) twice a week and he said they would be fine to race as yearlings next years. Any replies would be welcome. All the best, Mick.

how about still give them the training, but split them up and jump a few of them in, unless you have any comeback races for them

They have been well trained to 25 miles, I just thought jumping them to 170 was asking a bit to much as there have been a lot of losses locally. The local trainer goes nearly 3/4 of the way to our first race point and on average takes 400+ with him, which at the moment is 200 less than a local fed sends, I missed the comeback race by one week.

mick, do as the old timer tells you mate, 170 miles far too much, they will be fine as yearlings ;)

I agree with blackdog

there's plenty of people out there who don't even race their young birds

I've got a few young birds who have hit wires before racing started - and it doesn't look as if they will be ready for the last race - but I'm not bothered - and I wouldn't put them in a 60 miler at the end of the season if they weren't ready - I certainly wouldn't jump any youngsters into a 170 mile race (though I'm sure others would and do)and I haven't suffered any major losses with young birds

Good luck in whatever you decide

Put 26 with the trainer today, he had about 400 on, had 8 together then 1s and 2s but got them all within an hour so I was happy for today, done the 50 mile in about 55 minutes. Thanks for all the replies. Mick
