adam owen Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 whats your thoughts on block lofts?are wooden ones better ?
andy Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 whats your thoughts on block lofts?are wooden ones better ? [/quote I would defo prefer a brick built loft with a cavity and thermalite block on the inside on all walls.
Guest phillip Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 "whats your thoughts on block lofts?are wooden ones better ?" Concrete or brick on its own is too cold . Even in South Africa with a much warmer climate . The ones I,ve seen were lined with sheets of plywood . Also easier to clean & keep the nasties out
adam owen Posted November 5, 2009 Author Report Posted November 5, 2009 oldyellow ;D ;D ;D good answear ha ha do u think it will make any diff to the birds i ask as somebody told me they couldnt get widow cocks to race tidy from a block shed
pjc Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 concrete lofts are harder to get the ventilation right but easier to insulate for temp control if you so wish although can be very cold if unheated!
adam owen Posted November 5, 2009 Author Report Posted November 5, 2009 phiilp thats whats playing on my mind if i did build one of blocks i would insilate it out then ply board it over the top on inside but i just think as a structure it would be cheeper to make and last 4 ever that way but if it ment the birds not to performe as good i would deffo have wooden one
Guest mick bowler Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 This is my new one: Theres vents (controlable) at the front and if you see on pic 2 top right on the back wall (false ceiling to go in) thats where the ceiling extract sytem will vent out.

Guest mick bowler Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 good look with the rest of the build mate looking good so far how many you on about putting in there 25 or so all the best. Well it was designed for a lot more being 26 x 14, so equal to a 52 x 7 loft, but with store and office too, but i have been restricted by planning to 30 birds.
Fair Play Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 One of the best I saw was in Zimbabwe 4units Roughly 6ft square looked great and his birds flew well and the block kept the termites at bay, sheet roof with false wooden roof (treated)
Dodgy Trapper Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 Looks a great idea no need to paint the loft regular and will last forever. One question is what are the rules on planning permission. Would you need it?. Is there something about the height and being fixed structure?.

Guest kev d Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 hi mick , how much did it cost for them blocks cos i can get them cheap im thinking of doing the same as you building a block loft . cheers kev

Guest phillip Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Adam , some good ideas came out of this thread . Ventilation is very important and so is Temp control . Maintenance free is a definite yes as it is expensive to repair or paint regular . A member in our club used Pre cast concrete slabs and in the end had to panel the inside because it was cold inside the loft and his birds simply did not perform well . After paneling , the results at the clock spoke for itself Cheers

Will your office stuff not get covered in bloom :-/ There will be a partition in between and the doors will both be opening out so you cant walk from one to another, and the mechanical ventilation is on 24/7 contolled by stats, so hopefully not be too much dust or bloom.
Guest phillip Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Mick it sure does look good . When done , please post a photo .
