Guest frank dooman Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 What would they have been used for? were they not put up for a no of reasons food and to save the phesants from BOP so they went for the doves/pigeons instaed of their game birds
Guest frank dooman Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 i wonder how the birds got there the land owners put them in there and were allowed to breed freely

Taylorsloft Posted March 3, 2010 Author Report Posted March 3, 2010 wouldnt a dovecote that big not be an attraction for BOP's? they got away with killing them in those days :X well some things never change ;)
Guest frank dooman Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 wouldnt a dovecote that big not be an attraction for BOP's? that used to be what they were for maybe we should go back in time and build more and fill them with strags chokeing with canker and anything else that will do damage to BOP ,s job done the natural way no breaking any laws just takeing care of business
THE FIFER Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 farmers had them for the manure and squabs to eat
Guest IB Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 Have seen them on and off since I was a boy, there is the remains of one near where I used to live, between Bellshill & Motherwell, can't pinpoint it's location so long ago, but I'd guess its in what is now Strathclyde Park; Come full circle to a preserved, listed one in Westquarter Falkirk, close to where I now live, road is named for it, Dovecot Road. Westquarter was once a private estate, with its big house and dovecot housing pigeons for the table. Local council acquired estate, bulldozed everything bar the dovecot, its surrounded by homes now. Also going by train when training, see big house (ruin) and its dovecote between Longniddry & Drem. Another full circle. Pigeons now live in the ruined house, not the dovecote. I think its a listed dovecote.
Guest Freebird Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 All the country estates had them as an easy source of food. They would gather youngsters just before they could take to the wing. Easy meat.
