Buying (Somewhat) Proven Birds From Europe

hi lads

 

the question is for my father

 

basically, he's started to race here in Ireland just this season,

 

his results have been "ok", but obviously, being new, he has plenty to learn

 

he was wondering though, regading stock birds

 

how would you go about buying birds from the continent, i.e holland, belgium, germany, and of course britain

 

any help would be great lads

do your home work , haggle , and check with goverment bodies i.e defra on rules of bring birds in from other countrys i know here all you need to do is notify your bring birds in and have vet check them as fit to travel , im sure there be fanciers in your area that travel often and will know the rules

My advice to your father is to buy at home, he won't get BETTER birds because they are from a certain country, or for that matter from better fanciers.

Go to the top man in your own area and spend your money there. You have the advantage right away of knowing the stock you buy already perform and/or produces pigeons to perform at the top of the result sheet in Ireland.

I'm sure the opportunity to buy foreign will come to him in time, for example Martha Van Geel came from Holland to sell pigeons here in Lanarkshire, i'm sure they must visit Ireland too. ;)

If you can find a Top Flyer in your own local club, you must go for it. Right away, you could ask the owner which one of his recomended. There's somewhere here in UK Federations or Amal that can compete up to 26,000 birds. That's amazing race. Buying birds from Europe, there's no guarantee that your money's will have it back if your not satisfied. I've got experienced, that gave me a hard time. It cost me dear, the shipment fee to send it back of the 2 birds & direct call from my mobile to Netherland. I paid in good faith. But still, I end up with their limping hen.

I agree with these posts, we have some of the best race birds in the world here, what's our obsession with birds with a foreign ring on its leg

Some good advice here which I agree with.

The people who import pigeons from abroad do so mainly to sell the offspring on the strength of the vendor's reputation.

There are exceptions but I have found this to be what happens in most instances.

there is some good advice here. there is a lot of fanciers in your own area

that wont sell you birds because you are competition to them.get your birds

from as local to you as possible and do your homework as said before there is a lot

of first class fanciers here in GB and you will get a good deal. a lot of good pigeons sold on hear

If your looking abroad, then buy from the birds that have bred the winners, not from the winners unless they have bred winners too and never be scared to try a brother or sister to a good winner that has won nothing, as contrary to popular belief its not just winners that breed winners, but the winning genes has to be there!

Just keep looking around, there's a lot of big race here in UK. Just example & have a look the front page of BHW issued last Nov. 05th, 2010.
