the  birds tell you what they want, and at what time of year, i,e theyll throw the maize out whilst feeding young, theyll want more protein whilst moulting, and the racing feed will depend on what races you intend to race, after the moult the birds tend to eat less, its at this time ,you dont want too much fat on them, as fat hens, have difficulty in laying, but on saying that ,nature again takes over, as they tend to loose weight naturaly, when pairing and driving.

Ok so if i,m going out to buy a couple of bags today to see me over the next wee while what should i be asking for? a bag of beans and a bag of high protein mixture to mix through it or what?

dear celtic,

as my birds are still just cleaning up in the moult,i am still feeding 50% beans,& 50% moulting mix.my suggestion would be that you do the same,so buy yourself a bag of each & mix as above.Beans have about 26% protein anyway. All the best Billy

hello again celtic,

im sorry i dont know which area you live in but i get my feed from woodside farm feeds(tom law)torwood by larbert, falkirk.i think the beans are about the same price that clockman is quoting for beans in his area.

the last time i got my feed i noticed that the beans had changed from old to new crop, but still a nice bean & still nice firm droppings with these,if you live in the glasgow area i do know of someone who i heard was going down to the borders to uplift several tons of beans from a farm there,i intend to sample these shortly & i know they will be cheaper than what i pay just now. billy

Hi,

It`s cheaper to buy beans now, than 25 years ago,£2.50 for tics or massive horse beans56lbs ,load and bag yourself.

    You`ll find NOTHING better for the birds,whatever you pay,or where you go..for sure..you can`t beat `em.

If your a bit scared ifyou think they are too fresh, just do what our old man used to,get a bagfull, when they come staight in from being havested,Sept time, then bred a pair of latebreds off a stockpair useing the beans only.If your happy with the droppings ect..book in a seasons supply.

I just bought a load for my nephew ,after testing his birds with the beans for several days....the droppings should tell you all you need to know.

Hopper fed, they will keep in wonderful condition,on open hole ect....

Never be afraid of losing control over the birds, they will do somersaults to dive for the loft if you trap useing a bit of mixture,or maize, even as Rose says, penuts(bit expensive).

BUT,youMUST put in the fat to win at the distance, smallseeds, maize, peanuts,or even oil over the feed,...but if you don`t put the fat`s into them at the end, you`ll be down the pan¬

i would certainly agree with beans for the distance, but would also feed a mix nearer the time, of the race and even a handfull of mix whilst feeding beans, the reason for this is they could be a long time in the basket, longer still if its holdovers, the convoy of birds are usualy fed a mix, so they will be used to eating this , they could be anything from 4 to 8 days in the basket, and really have to eat all they can eat, during this time.,, and i think not to be confused at sending fat birds and putting the fats, into them,,,pigeons will never get fat on beans, but they will have body , ,,,a good idea with ben  there, rear up latebreds on the beans you get, if the latebreds are not perfect the beans are not.

rose, do you get much trouble with weevil holes in your farm beans & do you think they pose any harm to the birds. billy

HAVE KNOWN SOME PEOPLE SAY THAT IF THE BEANS HAVE WEEVIL HOLES IN THEM THATS A SIGN THAT THEY ARE GOOD BEANS NOT TO SURE OF THAT MYSELF ALLTHOUGH I,VE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH BEANS LIKE THAT.

i wouldnt take beans with weevil holes in them, you could well be right pigeon man, the weevil might select the best beans, but would eat part of the goodness in the bean, and the hole thats left is open to mould and even other insects, i would preffer a fresh, clean skinned , fat bean.   unlike me, a has bean ;D ;D ;D

Agree about no weevils, Jimmy. Smacks of poor quality 'something' to me.  :(

Anybody know : does the weevil attack the beans on the plant, during drying, or while  in storage?

there`s nothing wrong with plenty of weevil holes in them, probably help with the B12

if you get wevil holes in your beans, your getting less bean for your money, like buying   polo,s    the mint with the hole in the middle  if you weigh a dozen weevil holed beans then weigh a doz, beans without weevil holes youll see the differance in weight,,,,,mean scotsman

jimmy they look like last years beans to me,as they have a bit of colour about them.they really are first class beans & definately no sign of weevil holes, they are far better looking beans than the ones i have been buying from my local feed merchant & cheaper.

they are in thick paper bags tied with wire at the top, the printing on the bags reads: st. cuthberts farm cornhill-on-tweed.

nice to hear from you jimmy as the last time i saw j. white in the flesh so to speak was many years ago in a very amusing video loaned to me by big jimmy home from armadale featuring the said j.w.

glad to see you haven"t changed going by your postings which i enjoy reading, cheers for now jim.   billy mclaren
