Twenty dead in Polish roof collapse, 100 trapped

Sunday January 29, 12:46 AM

CHORZOW, Poland (Reuters) - A roof collapsed at a packed exhibition hall in southern Poland on Saturday, killing at least 20 people and trapping about 100 in freezing conditions, officials said.

As temperatures plummeted to minus 15 Celsius (5 Fahrenheit) in the city of Chorzow, emergency crews working under floodlights fought through snow and debris from the metal roof to free those inside a building

the size of a soccer field.

More than 120 people were injured in the collapse during a meeting of hundreds of pigeon enthusiasts from across Europe and Poland. The nationalities of the dead were not known but hospitals said five Germans, a Czech and a Belgian were injured.

"We heard something snap like a match breaking and people started to panic right away, realising what was happening," an injured witness told the private TVN24 television station from hospital.

"I started to run and something fell on me, others trampled over me and I was able to crawl out on hands and knees."

Andrzej Gaska, spokesman for the regional police, said: "From our crisis centres, we have found there are about 20 fatalities. We don't know if foreigners are among them."

Children were among the dead, Krzysztof Mejer, spokesman for the provincial authorities, told TVN24.

Polish television showed one man pinned under a section of the corrugated metal roof, his head and shoulders projecting, asking for help.

Television stations said rescuers were in mobile telephone contact with some of those trapped under the wreckage.

"Our biggest problem is the freezing cold, which is endangering the lives of those trapped in the rubble," Gaska said.

Rescue workers started to blow hot air into the collapsed structure to increase the chances of survival for those trapped.

COLDEST WINTER

The show of racing pigeons, one of the largest in Europe, attracted participants from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Ukraine and Poland, its Web site said.

Hours after the disaster pigeons flew aimlessly around the building.

Nearly 1,000 police, fire fighters and military gendarmes took part in the rescue and well as teams from local mines.

They carried out the most seriously injured on stretchers and brought in heavy metal cutting equipment over snowy ground.

Fire fighters with dogs trained to find victims beneath wreckage were also sent to the scene.

The police initially said the weight of the snow caused the roof to collapse but the building manager told Polish television that snow had been regularly cleared from the roof of the modern building.

Poland is experiencing its coldest winter in several decades. The death toll from a cold snap this winter stood at 199 on Saturday but was expected to top 200 over the weekend.

Temperatures have fallen to as low as minus 30 Celsius in parts of Europe. The cold has killed the poor and vulnerable, disrupted transport, highlighted gas supply problems and frozen parts of the Black Sea.

Earlier this month, 15 people died at an ice rink in the town of Bad Reichenhall in southern Germany when a 34-year-old roof collapsed under the weight of snow.

Czech rescue officials said a woman was injured the same week when the roof of a supermarket collapsed under the weight of snow.

Had thought I had heard 'pigeon show' in the newscast on TV on the collapse the other night. What a dreadful thing to happen, and even within the scope of our own posts, unfortunately the toll of those killed & injured is rising..

My thoughts and condolences to relatives and friends.

As a Polish boy hearing about the recent tragedy in my country I started reading about pigeons and what this wonderful hobby is all about. I am a ham radio operator (SQ6ELB is my call) and I see that this hobby has a lot in common with mine:) Pigeon racing must be very interesting and very exciting! It is an older way of sending distant information than radio, and the fact that it was done by these wise animals called pigeons will deeply increase my sense of respect to those birds and the people who dedicate their free time to this great activity.

What a pity a person from my neighbourhood that could get me involved in this wonderful hobby unfortunately died in this terrible collapse:(

All the best

Maciej from Poland

THIS EMAIL WAS FROM A FRIEND

Hi Frank,

We were in Poland and we got out savely and we had a lot of luck.

From the Belgians who were there 1 died , he was a friend of us and 5 min. before he was still with us.

He went to his shop to tell them to close it , so we could go back to our hotel and we would spend the night , because he knew some places to celibrate the good fair we had until that time. But 5 min. later he was death together with my translator and a friend of Hungary.

We were under the roof but we could get out after 2 or 3 min. It was incredible what we saw when we came out and everything in disorder, panic and we couldn’t find our friends but after 1h we just still missed 3 persons and after 2h we knew that they probably would be death , because they didn’t answer their mobiles.

And Sunday morning is was confirmed that they were death. It was unbelievable how fast it happened in 5 sec. everything was down it was like domino blocks.

The guys who were on the other side (in our backs) 6 of the 9 died and we were just separated by 1 wooden plate. I don’t know how we got out but we are save and healthy.

Thanks for Your mail

And I hope I see sometime

Greetings,

Eric
