Diamond dave Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 Can anyone tell me if it possible to get mealy cock babies from a blue hen / mealy cock mating
PIGEON_MAN Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 YES DAVE YOU CAN, INFACT YOU CAN GET EITHER BLUE OR MEALY COCKS OR BLUE OR MEALY HENS.
ribble Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 what about reds??????im sure we had one.but could be wrong it was a while back..
Guest Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 I tend to disagree here, we have several mealies in our Van Reet Family, the mealy baby will be a cock if the mother is a mealy, we have never bred a mealy hen from a mealy mother. We do sometimes get red checkers.
schouwman71 Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 yes you can, i have a red, mealy family of janssens and have had mealy cocks breed mealy cocks, dont know if its down to an inbred family that i have but they do breed red cheqs aswell,i have read books on this subject and it says that you carnt , but i have many times.
THE FIFER Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 I HAVE A MEALY COCK PAIRED TO A BLUE HEN FOR 4-5 YEARS ALL BLUES HAVE BEEN COCKS, AND THE MEALIES HENS
carl Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 Dont be suprised a good freind had two blues from a long family of mostly blues paired together and they bred two very strange bright coloured redish youngbirds
schouwman71 Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 I once had two red cheqs breed two buetifull pencil blue cocks,i coudnt believe my eyes as the pair was my top stock pair at the time so were kepy seperate in a section on their own so nothink could have treaded the hen.
PIGEON_MAN Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 A MEALY COCK X A BLUE HEN WILL BREED MEALY AND BLUE COCKS ALSO THE SAME COLOUR,S IN HENS. A MEALY COCK X A MEALY HEN WILL ONLY BREED MEALY COCKS OR MEALY AND BLUE HENS. A MEALY COCK X RED HEN WILL BREED MEALY AND RED COCKS OR MEALY, RED, BLUE,AND BLUE CHEQUER HENS. A MEALY COCK X BLUE CHEQ.HEN WILL BREED MEALY,BLUE,RED AND BLUE CHEQ.COCKS AND HENS. A MEALY HEN X BLUE COCK WILL BREED MEALY COCKS OR BLUE HENS. A MEALY HEN X BLUE CHEQ.COCK WILL BREED MEALY AND RED COCKS OR BLUE AND BLUE CHEQ.HENS. A MEALY HEN X RED COCK WILL BREED MEALY AND RED COCKS OR MEALY,RED,BLUE OR BLUE CHEQ.HENS. BEFORE ANYONE SAYS ANY DIFFERANT ACCORDING TO THE EXPERT,S IN GENETICS NO OTHER COLOURS CAN BE BRED FROM THESE PAIRINGS EXCEPT THE COLOUR WHITE MAY APPEAR AS WHITE FLIGHT,S OR AS A PIED.THINK I,VE GOT THEM RIGHT.
Guest beautyhomer Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 Can anyone tell me if it possible to get mealy cock babies from a blue hen / mealy cock mating Yes,you will get mealy cocks from this mating. If the cock is homozygos for ash red all the young will be ash red but the young cocks will be heterozygos (inpure) ash reds. If the cock is heterozygos for ash red 50% of the young hens will be blue and 50% mealies. The young cocks will 50% blues and 50% inpure ash reds

Guest beautyhomer Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 Dont be suprised a good freind had two blues from a long family of mostly blues paired together and they bred two very strange bright coloured redish youngbirds These youngsters sound like recessive reds.Obviously both parents were carrying one gene for recessive red which only manifests itself when mated together.
Guest WINGS 04 Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 i have blue cock and mely hen and the havent had a hen of them only maly cocks and blue cocks but the blues do not last long mely has won 2 races
Guest beautyhomer Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 PIGEON_MAN, In all of the mating examples you have used using an ash red cock, either red check or mealy you are assuming that he is heterozygos for ash red. This is the only way he can breed blue hens.If he is a homozygos ash red all his daughters will be ash red also

A freind had two blues that bred two red youngbirds,i saw them with my own eyes,Unless the hen had messing around away from home.

ribble Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 beauty homer you seem clued up on this subject.i have a blue pied cock whos grand mother was a red.this year i am pairing him to a cheq hen a daughter of a red cock.what are the chances of any reds, cheers
PIGEON_MAN Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 CARL ACCORDING TO THE EXPERTS YOU CANNOT BREED ANY OTHER COLOUR OFF TWO BLUES EXCEPT BLUES WHICH CAN HAVE WHITE IN THEM ONLY.BEAUTYHOMER I,M NO EXPERT THIS IS WHAT I HAVE READ AND WAS WRITTEN BY EXPERT,S WHAT YOU SAY COULD BE RIGHT I CERTAINLY WONT ARGUE.RIBBLE AGAIN ACCORDING TO THE EXPERT,S YOU WILL BREED BLUE,S AND BLUE CHEQ.COCKS AND HENS DEFINATELY NO REDS.THEN AGAIN WHO AM I TO SAY.
Guest beautyhomer Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 beauty homer you seem clued up on this subject.i have a blue pied cock whos grand mother was a red.this year i am pairing him to a cheq hen a daughter of a red cock.what are the chances of any reds, cheers Hi ribble, you do not say whether the cheq hen is red or blue.If she is blue then you will only breed blues in both sexs.If she is a red cheq then you will breed red cocks and blue hens.
speedbird Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 i have a cracker of a mealy cock hes been paired to the same hen for the last 3years & he always breed 2mealy cocks from same nest
Diamond dave Posted February 1, 2006 Author Report Posted February 1, 2006 Wow - You guys all seem to know your stuff! Thank yu all for your help. However, now I am a little concerned about what is this heterozygos and homozygos and how can yu tell the difference?
tam pepper Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 i can only agrree with you carl , , only thing is white is not a colour
Guest beautyhomer Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 Wow - You guys all seem to know your stuff! Thank yu all for your help. However, now I am a little concerned about what is this heterozygos and homozygos and how can yu tell the difference? In relation to mealy cocks a homozygos ash red would have 2 ash red genes a heterozygos ash red would have 1 ash red gene and 1 blue/black gene As Ash red is dominant over blue both cocks would look the same at a quick glance. However on closer inspection the heterozygos one would be found to have black flecks on it.This is the blue genes influence
Diamond dave Posted February 5, 2006 Author Report Posted February 5, 2006 Beauty Homer Thanx for that - most helpful. Does this mean that the mealy cock without the back splash (homozygos) will produce only mealy cock babies and that the mealy black splash (heterozygos) cock will produce either blue or mealy cock babies?
