rockinrick Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 hi all i have had a question put to me that i thought i had answer for but reading couple articles in bhw i find my answer is different to theres ,, the question is which way should ure( race ) loft face , ? south / north / east / west ?as i have always faced mine south
Guest Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Personally I think the loft shoud face south so the birds can maximum benefit of whatever sunlight there is
Diamond dave Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 I agree with the wicked witch. If you do a bit of gardening you'd know that a lot of the delicate plants like Wisteria etc should be on a south facing wall. This maximises the warmth and light on them which should be the same as your birds. RockonRockingRick
MsPigeon Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 I agree, the morning sun is nice and the birds all lay in it like taking a shower with the wing open. But where I live you also have to make sure the predominante wind does not blow all our rain in the loft and make it damp.
rockinrick Posted March 20, 2006 Author Report Posted March 20, 2006 ok thnx folkies i thought it was best to point loft to the south so birds get sun ,, but does it have any affect on birds which way loft facing ie built in compas ?
Mike Lycett Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Technically I'd have had South or SE - but Houdini's pen always has the best form on our garden - and that faces plum West.
peterpau Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Out of choice I'd go fo south east . but look at what mike says. does his choice contradict his experience. maybe
rockinrick Posted March 20, 2006 Author Report Posted March 20, 2006 ok so i not wrong then lol cheers folkies:)
Mike Lycett Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 If you race South Road, then I think as long as you aren't North or East then it don;t matter all that much. We have one loft facing South & the other West, and both lofts perform well enough.
Guest slugmonkey Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I am thinking of putting trap facing north on new loft we have prevailing winds from south I have many openings in loft with majority of space facing south
MsPigeon Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I am thinking of putting trap facing north on new loft we have prevailing winds from south I have many openings in loft with majority of space facing south I'm confused slugmonkey, what do you mean "majority of space facing south"?
Mike Lycett Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Rose If you were concentrating on 0-200 milesthen I think the otherlofts might need a bit of assistance capturing their form. Fairplay to you though... Birds first - once that's in place then the rest is easy. Mike
Mike Lycett Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Rose Agree entirely The Norterly faced one for the distance wouldn't capture any real form until the heat of the summer.. Viva - BARCELONA !!! ;D
Guest slugmonkey Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 I have openings on ALL sides with more to come but largest is facing south I am contemplating cutting opening on nort side high up for traps
AlanWilkins Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 well mine face north east totaly the wrong direction they get all the cold winds and very little sun n still win so i think it doesnt effect them
AlanWilkins Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 well its the truth only way i can change it is knock the house down but you have to do the best with what you have (mind the young that go over can trap well ) lol
Guest Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 Mine face eachover East and West but theres only about 12ft between them and have had to do allsorts of trickery to get the ventilation right. I should have thought about it B4 I put them up as I could have had them facing south. The only thing that put me off was having the lofts facing the house, as I didnt want the birds coming out and landing on the roof.
