keano Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 hello, my father in law would like to know how you put weight on a widowhood cock.? as when they were putting the birds through on friday someone commited they were a bit on the thin side any help or advice would be grateful. many thanks.
Mike Lycett Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 Keano Depends on "why" they are light. Have they been overworked? Are they sickening for something? What are they fed on at present?
ribble Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 some would say that if they were bob on.....maybe a bit more protein when they return/start of the week?
Guest shadow Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 How much does he feed and are you training as well as racing
keano Posted May 2, 2006 Author Report Posted May 2, 2006 they are flying well around the loft so no need to train at the mo.
TheSaddler Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 Some may laugh at my suggestion - but feed them 50/50 widowhood/breeding mix sun to wed - then 100% widow mix thurs and Fri morning.. This is how i feed my cocks.. The high protein breeding mix will get the weight back - Also you may want to try something to boost the digestive system on a sun/mon - therefore getting them to eat more -- There's plenty of cheap/natural products on the market that will do this.
Mike Lycett Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 I'd give 'em a feed high in fats like versele-laga energy-plus on wed, thurs & fri added to their normal corn - 50/50 to be brutally honest
swilcox Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 Dont let them out!!!!! All my channel winners spent a few days in the loft before they went!!!! Stuart
jimmy white Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 i used to feed 2 or 3 peanuts, and as the races got longer and harder, i would increase this, i found that when they had been on widowhood for a while and in the heat of the summer [thats a joke]they never ate as much, but could get them to eat the peanuts, but going back to keanos post, you didnt say how they got on on the saturday, that should be able to tell you if there was anything wrong.
keano Posted May 3, 2006 Author Report Posted May 3, 2006 on saturday race about 4 minutes behind the winner they look ok its just when handled they seem a bit thin. not to thin
darin Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 widowhood cocks should feel like a bag of air in ya hand .....! not like a bottle of brown ale ! just my opinion and a few others i no !
jimmy white Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 keano, how did you winter feed them b4 breeding, they werent that far behind, so things cant be too bad maybe a litle higher protein would help, but why not get a second opinion on the handling of them, just a thought.
Diamond dave Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 The winning pigeons in our club in the first two weeks were visibly ounces lighter than my own birds ( I marked them and made a mental note). Sounds to me like there aint nothing wrong Keano. 4 minutes behind isnt so bad that the conditions may not be to blame or just not quite in form. We're still at the shorter distances yet, In my opinion too much protein will slow the birds even more at the moment.
AlanWilkins Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 50 % super diet all fat 50% gem red carbsn protine sort um in aweek
