the best bit of advice I can give you is do them as soon as you can after weaning. I have suffered from this terrible disease so now vaccinate as soon as they are weaned. It is a soul destroying disease, that is why it is worth the money you have to pay out. Personally cannot understand the fanciers who dont do it, as make no mistake there are plenty.

I don't do it in the neck, if they move and you hit a nerve, there dead. I myself give it in the crotch of the leg and body in the weblike skin. Never lost a bird :-) Not near the worry.

Not quite correct to say that PMV vaccination should be given in loose skin at the back of the neck.

The recommended place is at the base of the neck where it meets the bird's back, and what you are aiming for is to inject the vaccine into the void between the bird's two skins.

Will try and post the MAFF guideline leaflet.

The loose skin between the leg and body is the same as trying to pul the sikin up on the back of the neck, but when you spread the leg away from the body the loose skin is there and easy to place the needle. I probably shoot over 400 birds a year and have had good luck, and while there upside down ya might as well pox them at the same time :-)

IVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS INJECTING IN THE NECK, WITH ME HAVING FUSED SPINE, I TAKE ON ORDINARY CHAIR WITH BACK ON, TABLE OR BOX EITHER SIDE OF ME,,,,BASKET ON ONE TABLE, EMPTY ONE ON OTHER,LIFT EACH BIRD OUT, PUT IT BETWEEN MY LEGS, FIRMLY , FACING AWAY FROM ME, IVE TWO FREE HANDS NOW, GENTLY PULL THE HEAD AWAY FROM ME AND LIFT FEATHERS AT THE SAME TIME, WITH MY LEFT HAND, INJECT WITH MY RIGHT, THEN PLACE IN THE EMPTY BASKET, IVE DONE THIS FOR YEARS NOW FOR MANY FANCIERS, AND NEVER EVER HAD ANY ADVERSE REACTION,

DID INJECT MY LEG ONCE, BUT IT WAS OK,, I STARTED MOULTING THE NEXT DAY ;D ;D

A few Vets have stated the crotch skin is also a good location,it isn't injected into the meat as some but as stated between the skin and meat. Here is the Neddle I use, can load up to 22 shots at a time, one nice training basket full :-)

Leaflet pdf document is protected, won't let me copy. Here is an extract:-

5.3 There is a simple procedure for vaccination. Remove the bottle from the fridge and allow to reach room temperature. The bottle should be shaken before and during vaccination.

The vaccine should be injected under the skin at the base of the neck. Care should be taken to ensure that the needle has not come through the skin as if this happened no vaccine would be given to the bird. Make sure that the needle is under the skin before giving the dose of vaccine.

Agree very much with how you feel about needles. Felt same so our Secy did mine for a few years until he gave up the birds last year and I was left to do it myself from this year. No big deal really after you get into it. Watched technique Alistair used - bird held gently in crook of left arm and side, and injected using right hand, and adopted this too.

While in the 'needle thing' I read the instructions for giving the combined PMV and pigeon pox vaccine. Seems you could also pluck a few feathers from around the birds legs and use a brush to 'paint' the vaccine into the exposed follicles...

Agree with Fifer and Jimmy though, with practice it's easier using a needle and to do it in the bird's neck.

Thats another story I have giving the pox treatment, I don't pull any feathers, I jab them with a homemade 5 needle combo. the mix is to get in the blood from where the feather is pulled, so most here just jab with a needle that was dipped in the Bottle. I take 5 needles and stick them through a pencil erascer and tape the ends together for a handle. Dip in the bottle and Jab the bird just to the side of the breast bone this make 5 holes for the mix to enter the bird and gets a great take and you can feel the scab when it forms each time you handle the bird.

In the NEHU you have to fill a form in which requires two signatures, and has the details of Batch no for vaccine etc (not the form with the vaccine, this isn't allowed) but someone from our club comes and injects the birds and signs the forms and as owners we sign the form with all ring numbers of birds vaccinated saying that we are the owners of the birds, we get copy, club and fed secretaries get copies.

I USE 2 NEEDLES, I PUT ONE ON THE SYRINGE TO DRAW FROM THE BOTTLE AND TAKE THIS ONE OFF AND USE ANOTHER TO INJECT THE BIRD THIS WAY U ARE NOT PUTTING A NEEDLE WHICH HAS BEEN IN THE BIRD INTO THE BOTTLE
