wildaboutyou Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 Hi my partner and i first saw this pigeon on friday, by sat it was still outside so we looked for something on the net and found you people. We did as it said gave it a drink and some seed. The problem we have is how to catch it before we report it as a lost bird. We have managed to copy the ring details and i think it is a young bird as it has 06 for the year. Please please help as i am frightened it gets hurt. We have tryed to catch it by coaxing but its to clever for us. Is there a way of catching this bird without hurting it. We need to catch it tonight so we can report it first thing in the morning so any adavice asp would be grateful. Thanks Maz + Andy.
Henrik Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 It is Quite easy to catch a pigeon just grab it gently they are really hardy and dont hurt easily. Once you get it put it in a box. May be helpful if you asked for someone near you who keeps pigeons to come and pick it up.
REDCHEQHEN Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 It might be easy for you Henrik - but I can't catch a pigeon outside...! Entice it into an enclosed space with seed, don't hold on to its tail - as the feathers may well end up in your hand.. saw a stray in Whitby yesterday that someone had tried to catch - it didn't have a single tail feather ! Where are you from Maz and Andy ?
wildaboutyou Posted July 3, 2006 Author Report Posted July 3, 2006 We are in Stockport, i tried yesterday to coax it with seed but it was too fly (quick). I also had a basket ready to put over it but as soon as i got it out it flew away. I am looking after it as best i can but i am frightened a cat might get it as its only a baby.I also tried to grab it but its too quick. So today i have a tray of seed and i am going to try coax it in the back door i have a basket ready to put it in.Trouble is it says you should only feed and water it the first day and it will go home when its rested? I also have a site called ( http://www.interbug.com/pigeon/lost.html ) were i can report it as lost and it says they will come the next day and collect it. I do not know of anyone with pigeons. I have enclosed a picture of it maybe someone can indentify it.Its number is as follows GB0608805 Many thanks and god bless Maz
superstar Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 Get a box or washing basket and prop one end up with a stick about 10 - 12" long on a piece of string and place some seed around the outside and a good amount under the trap towards the back, then stay a safe distance away so he pops under and when hes picking away pull the string. Works every time and im sure the bird will soon be in your hands. Good luck and thank you for taking the time to help out a lost bird its good to hear about.
Henrik Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 Try phoning the RPRA on 01452 713 529 they may put you in touch with someone in Stockport who can help. The Website is http://WWW. RPRA.org
REDCHEQHEN Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 There is a letter missing from the ring number GB06_ 08805 If you can find the letter, we can possibly find the club it was issued to - there are a few members on this board who are from Cheshire - including pigeonpete, who has just lost most of his young birds in the last few days
wildaboutyou Posted July 3, 2006 Author Report Posted July 3, 2006 Sorry i missed the Z the number is as follows GB 06 Z 08805.
REDCHEQHEN Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 Perhaps you could see which is the closest, and ask for advice. The Z ring issue is unfortunately a general one and likely to be a breeder that has since been transferred to the current owner, if the bird is not contained it does pose a problem though NW132 STOCKPORT F C Mrs Pat Marston, 87 Browning Road, Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire SK5 6JT. REDCHEQHEN Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 I am a bit slow on the computer and it took me ages to compile my last post, in the meantime you posted the photograph - its very good. Your time and effort is very much appreciated, and your concern is heartening.
wildaboutyou Posted July 3, 2006 Author Report Posted July 3, 2006 Thank you i promise not to give up. I keep a check on it all the time. I have just set up the laundry basket and Andy is watching it, ( just lucky we have this week of work thankfully as we are having some alterations done at home) although i did try this yesterday and it was to quick or maybe i was to slow. The 06 part of the number does it stand for this year? Maz

jimmy white Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 yes ,maz, the 06 is the year the bird is born, youve been very kindabout the bird ,im sure the owner will appreciate that
Webmaster Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 When you catch the bird (good luck ) you may find that its owner has stampped their details onto one of the wing feathers; which can be checked by carefully opening one wing at a time to check the longer flight feathers. All the best Richard
