Elvan Willgrass Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 I have a young bird that seems to have a very bad head cold and catarrh. It first came to my notice when it did not exercise for long and it was loosing weight by not eating much plus it was wheezing terrible. I put it in a empty loft that I have and treated it with Rhonfield Gambazine, Ornithose and Nasaline, it did improve and started to eat again but it is a long way from being right as it is panting all the time just like someone with very bad asthma. I have raced birds since the early nineteen fifty's and have never had a bird like this. Does anybody know how I might sort this bird out, it has never raced and I never wanted it to. My loft a 45ft consrtuction was built with ventilation in mind.
andy Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 IF ALL YOUR OTHER BIRDS ARE FINE & SHOWING NO SYMPTONS OF A RESPIRATORY DISORDER I WOULD FILE THE PIGEON UNDER 'B' FOR BIN......GOOD LUCK.
schouwman71 Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 you have done the right things, dont kill it its not the birds fault, now just give it time to re cooperate,if its been like that a while it will take as long to get better, but dont kill them without a good reason try and look into what has caused it first.
Elvan Willgrass Posted August 29, 2006 Author Report Posted August 29, 2006 I will try the DoxyT if I can find where to get it. No other bird is affected and I don't want to kill it as it was gifted to me from a very good distance loft.
Guest Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 hi elvan, id have ur bird checked by a vet , i had a similar problem with my youngbirds,im not saying its wot i had but ,if ur bird is losing weight then it may well be psitticosis. similar to ornathosis.the vet may try giving u tetracycline anti biotic, PLEASE NOTE...if it is psitticosis..u can catch it...as i found out ,and its like a very bad flu. .i listened to flyers give it this and that but it dont help..a vet who knows about pigeons would be a choice worth taking.better be sure then sorry. psitticosis signs are a one eye cold, unable to fly long/sneezing/and weight loss.hope this helps ....look at ur birds at night when perching and see if they sneeze or scratch their beaks/heads...hope its just something simple .all the best anyway.
Pompey Mick Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 IF ALL YOUR OWN BIRDS ARE FINE AND IT IS JUST THE NEW INTRODUCTION THAT IS SHOWING SIGNS OF DISEASE I WOULD ISOLATE IT PERMANENTLY REGARDLESS OF ITS 'QUALITY'. WHY ASK FOR TROUBLE, YOU SEEM TO HAVE DONE ALL YOU CAN TO CURE THIS PIGEON.
THE FIFER Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 BE VERY CAREFUL WITH SICK BIRDS, KEEP IT WELL AWAY FROM UR OTHERS
Guest Silverwings Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 could try some GUNPOWDER its a product by columbine the proper name is SUPRA SLIJMPOEDER ANTIGLAIROL ,put the powder direct into the birds throat and stand well back !!!!!!!!!!!! the pigeon will blow and sneeze like hell ? will usually clear up any congestion.....ray
ribble Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 it would have to go if it was mine, you've done enough already.
Wiley Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 if it was mine im afraid would have to go to the big loft in the sky
Dave A Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 sorry just read your post please ignor it
jimmy white Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 im afraid its not worth it as it could be the downfall of your other birds, the bird would be better" away," sorry to have to put it that way, but really its true, i would also keep my eyes on the birds that bred it
