Chatrace Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 Use Seven dust , sprinkle all over the feathers and gently rub in under them. Do it outside and wear rubber gloves. other thing is 3 drops of Ivromec in the mouth
Guest ukseanuk Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 i always cresort my lofts 2x year and never get lice or mite. dont know if its cos i do this but i never use anythink eles at ALL.
Guest Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 most birds catch lice in the basket. which cant be helped as some flyers dont give their birds the right attention.thats when genuine flyers get problems they,ve already treated for.. the vet i use , uses a very small dose of ivomec.(spot)..this kills all lice....either a spot on the back of the neck or directly into the mouth....remember all medicines are poisonous if taken/given wrongly. ask ur local pigeon vet about this .
stew 75 Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 i once had the same problem with lice on birds tried every thing to free them from lice then i found the best way a pail of warter with half a bottle of DURAMITEX and dip them .then give them a bath 2 days later . worked for me
kev01293 Posted September 18, 2006 Author Report Posted September 18, 2006 thanks collect,cs,jimmy, chatrace, sean and invincible spirit for replying to my posting-me thinks il try the ivermectin in the water first,i always thought that u could only give ivermectin via drops onto skin and not directly into mouth as it had to be absorbed slowly by the pigeon? im sure i was told this by someone- can anyone enlighten me? kev
Guest Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 hi kev..graeme smith well respected vet in south wales. thats who advises this....ivomec is absorbed into the body of the bird,....lice bite into the blood of its host which in turn will release the ivomec into the louse/lice....i believe it rots their teeth ;D ;D ;D
Jeremy Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 Hi there lice do not suck on blood only mites do that. lice live on the pigeon by eating the bloom of it which is the pigeons dead skin high in protein. The best way is to spray the birds under the wings and the behind with duramitex or use perthrin or dip them in a bucket. You wont kill lice by putting anything in the water only worms and mites if using ivermectin. Do what i said at the start and you will be free of them for a while. Regards Jeremy..
schouwman71 Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 use herbal radox in a bucket of hot water and dip them in it for about 30 secs, make there feathers look nice plus gets rid of lice ( its true )
Jeremy Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 will the herbal radox kill the lice eggs that hatch out a few weeks later?
Guest Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 will the herbal radox kill the lice eggs that hatch out a few weeks later? I think that may be the cause of your 're-infestation' ... you're seeing the next generation. Usually needs a repeat dose of whatever 'spray' you use, backed up by a weekly bath. If you use garlic, keep the leftovers for a week and add the garlic water to the bath. Garlic is an insecticide (kills yeast, fungus, bacteria and virus too, and effective against trich, cocci and worms). Note also that Harkers Feather drops doesn't kill lice & mites directly, works as a repellant - the insects come off the birds and subsequently starve to death. Reckon the trouble would be them coming off a treated bird ... onto an untreated one?
Guest Vic Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Not long ago, just before I retired, whilst installing central heating in a disused cellar, I found some tubes of smoke pellets. Anyhow, to cut the story short, I decided to give them a go in my own lofts.I had completely forgot about them until a few weeks ago, and decided to try them out. They are, (or were) made by ICI and go under the name "Gammexane" smoke generators no. 22. They have been absolutely awesome, Everything GONE! Even the tightly packed stubborn quill lice have disappeared. If I had any red mite they too have bit the dust. I left the birds outside during the lighting of the pellets and when the smoke had completely cleared, back in they went. The smell lingered for a day or two, being part of the treatment that sees everything that crawls, off. If you can still buy it, try it! you will be amazed. Vic.
Guest Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 There is a smoke bomb on the market for use in pigeon lofts, used when the birds are still in it. Pronofit. Box of 3 tabs. Used one tab a few years back, with me still in the loft basically to watch how the birds reacted. They didn't like the tab flaring (on the shovel) but otherwise seemed OK about the smoke. It was me that felt 'chesty' for a few days! Think the problem with these one-off kinda treatments is: how long does bug-free last? A day, a week, a few hours?
Guest Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Boddy and Ridewood sell Pronafit smoke bombs 3 for £9.99 - I was thinking of trying them before I read this post so going to order them now.
Guest Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Sorry Bruno should have read your post first before I put mine up (lol). ;D
Guest Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 I think if you can get the lofts bug free to start with, you have something to work with if you are only just catching on to things in the bath water like garlic. Mind you I pm'd Fifer, left messages in lice thread and the boy still aint told me how strong he makes up his garlic bath water. ;D ;D ;D You not talking to me Fifer or what, lol.
Dave A Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 i have been told that vinegar in the bath sorts it out half a cup of malt vinegar per bath
Guest Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 I use garlic and vinegar in my birds weekly bath. Got a book on vinegar from one of those cheapo book shops, and have been concentrating on its insectide properties: some quotes:- slugs - drop a few drops of white vinegar on them! ants - pour vinegar over the entrances to stop them crossing the threshold. cats - pour vinegar round the childrens sand box to stop cats using it as a litter box. flies - pour vinegar round the side of the swimming pool to keep flies away! ;D ACV and water as spray to keep flies at bay. dust mites - 4fl oz (8 tablespoons) ACV to a gallon of water, kills them. headlice - warm ACV insect repellant - spray ACV fleas (cats & dogs) - add ACV to bathwater. and water containers: white or ACV to clean out the chicken's or pet's water containers which are left outside. Pour a small amount in the container, wash out the gunk with a rag, and rinse. Keeps water containers clean and fresh. Repeat once a month.
Roland Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 You know a Fox will get a squab of sheep wool and hold it in his mouth. Then foxy swims around in a river, or part of stream / lake and get deep till just his snout is out of the water. He then drops the wool ... with all the nits, lice etc on it that have kept getting higher till the wool was last resort. Dip the birds in Duramite and have done with it... even put a little regular in the bath... but remember if they shower proper they won't be able to fly... !
