Roland, Agree with most of what you say. If my pigeons are not right I could more than likely tell you 9 times out of 10 what the problem is but 9 times out of 10 isn't a 100% strike rate. By using a vet to nip any potential problem in the bud cant be a bad thing can it?

Waste of money? we all value things different.

Well Tony, I do agree with your views of course. But it seems that Vets here are limited, and as such some just fob you off.... But there again if there is treatment and the results are good .. well then it is well spent I guess. Just dubious as to what they can and are able to actually tell you.

Well I can agree with much that has been said in this thread. There is a lot of things in keeping pigeons which people find interesting and home 'lab analysis' is one of them.

Take the point of a good microscope is a must (must be good John at £2500 ) but the benefit must also be limited by user's expertise and knowledge.  A properly collected and prepared sample is important too. You need to know what you are looking for / at, know what you are seeing actually means, or at least have something to refer to 'tae find oot whit the devil this is'. :)

I think all of these points rule me out from doing it myself. But as I said earlier, I know someone else that does ....  ;D
