I dont think this programme was intended for fanciers though Sean, being in the research field it has been an intriging phenomenom for many years. from the fanciers point of view the money could be better spent elsewhere but on a scientific view it has baffled scientists for years and they all want to be the first to crack it. Personally thought the programme was very good despite its downfalls.

What I thought fascinating was the fact that the pigeons wanted to land on the other side of the river although they could not actually see the loft.

I dont think they will ever crack how they home, only the pigeon knows at the end of the day LOL. And the likes of migrating birds such as blue tits and swallows etc, look at the amazing journeys they make, without any training or any idea of where there going - PURE INSTINCT I think  :)

I think it was a great program and most people at work today seems very interested in how they do it!!!!  For once pigeons were shown in a good light and for what they are good at.

What made me laugh was were all talking about it when my a fax arrived and it was a large picture of the Rambo from Germany, caused quite a laugh.

Sean i find your response most disturbing, remember it was a program for the general public not pigeon fanciers.

Move your loft from one side of the garden to the other... and they home there for yonks after! But Like I say, it may be of interest to Joe Public ... iN fact I'll wager that as a result some one joins a pigeon Club!

Watching how they returned to where they thought the loft was at exactly feeding time has made me think/realise that I need to be more consistent in the times I feed!

;DI agree with pecked hen . i also need some consistency with feed times . i know when a youngster has homed late ,sometimes after missing for a few days they very often turn up at feed time? ;D Got to be some relevance in it . I also thought the part about birds smelling the way home was a bit strange but the theory , after experiment was worthy of note ! I have never treated for respitory but may look into that next season ? all food for thought ! ::)

I agree with the others that it was a very good program, for pigeon fancier and Joe Public alike. All the pigeon people, their set-up and their birds made for first class advertising of the sport. And putting the liberations to classical music really upped our game.

Program showed the pigeons' intelligence and  gave them their rightful places as 'athletes of the sky' AND a Wonder of Nature, possessing a faculty that science hasn't even begun to solve.

Ol' Sheldrake messed-up by not taking the loft and the birds out into the channel first to allow the birds a fix on the loft's final position before attempting the last experiment.

If he'd got them to cross open water to a loft in the middle of the sea (his intended experiment as he advertised yonks ago in the BHW) he'd have gone down in history.

My sole concern was letting these young birds go for 58 hours without food and water until Sheldrake finally decided to end the channel experiment.

Scored 99 out of 100 for me.   ;D
