jimmy white Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 ive just been looking at some modern champions and some older champions,,one thing struck me ,,some of them you wouldnt give tuppence for, but their champs ok.,, like many, i like to handle and look at a beautifull pigeon, i often wonder if were breeding for that, or breeding for performance :)
THE FIFER Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 YES JIMMY I TAKE IT U ARE TALKING ABOUT LOOKS, SOME IF U DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE, ASE U SAY U WOULD'NT GIVE THEM A SECOND LOOK, BUT ITS THE PERFORMANCE THAT COUNT,
Guest WINGS 04 Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 I WOULD LIKE A LOFT FULL OF UGLY WINNERS THAN ONE WITH HOMERS THAT LOOK GOOD
Guest Hjaltland Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 A friend of mine, a very successfull distance flyer, said to me once ' anyone can breed good lookin birds' and i felt a twinge... When you are faced with controlling numbers you have one which has flown maybe less than the other, but is a real nice handling bird , maybe look good in the showpen, do you keep it in preference to any other? mmmm Been there! Dont be fooled by looks alone.... bit like people really. :X
Roland Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 Often it is the not so good looking bird that proves itself ... and why! Because the owner has always sent it and not too particular if they lost it.... like they then say'And to think I was...
Guest Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 A friend of mine handled David Clausings hen that won the Million Dollar Race a cpouple of years ago, said it was one of the tiniest hens he's ever handled and looked like a streeter
Guest CS Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 Linda, Has David Clasing got all birds back since bulgers stolen his pigeons ?
Guest Doostalker Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 You have to think of the old saying "Handsome is as handsome does" whether it be pigeons, race horses, dogs or any other working animal.
Guest Silverwings Posted November 19, 2006 Report Posted November 19, 2006 thinh that if the pigeons you keep please your own eyes ,you have a little more enthusiasm to work with them ......ray
jimmy white Posted November 20, 2006 Author Report Posted November 20, 2006 thinh that if the pigeons you keep please your own eyes ,you have a little more enthusiasm to work with them ......ray i agree with ray but would maybe add "please your own "mind" and eyes" i think its the inside of the bird that counts
peterpau Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 Don't pigeons please the eye more when they've performed? This year our best young bird was a scruffy looking little hen that you wouldn't give a second look. Come the end of the season I looked to see what she was bred from. (I always wait till the end of the season) Turned out to be from our best pair. Can't say I was surprised, but they have to prove them-selves first
jimmy white Posted November 20, 2006 Author Report Posted November 20, 2006 if you have a look at the photos thread youll see some of the champs from yesteryear, and some of the ads [look at the ugly duckling ;D] one especialy for bruno,," the verminator" off course with foot pump action ;D supplied with a zapper for the flies, once you finished with that lot youd be fitter than the birds ;D ;D photo of ruhr express [see war pigeons]
