schouwman71 Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Dec 4th i think, ive never paired early but think you need to to compete with young birds at the longer races, plus i carnt do darkness with shift work and long hours i do.
Silverdale Lofts Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Les are your lofts in the garden i use electric lights on timers come on 9am go off 5pm

Guest jason Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 2nd december for me, started with lights and heating tonight (get the 2006 birds used to it) just on with treating them for canker (wormed them last week and don't bother with cocci) jason
Wiley Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 this is how im hoping to do it hopefully if all goes to plan in laying ect and pairing up.This is the 91 day method i spoke about earlier.this ois if all goes to plan how and y i will be pairing up on january the 6th,and our first race is usually around easter time. 14 days from pairing to laying 18 days to hatch 22 days to parting young birds 5 days rest for the cocks 10 days to lay after re-pairing 8 days sitting 14 days seperated to the first race
Sean Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 2nd december for me, started with lights and heating tonight (get the 2006 birds used to it) just on with treating them for canker (wormed them last week and don't bother with cocci) jason jason so what time's you turning your light's on and heating mate and how long for? is all your bird's through the moult?if not want this effect them? just trying to understand it more mate not having a go or anythink just trying to learn
ribble Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 if you where to use lights on your race team would this not make them moult the flights early??? anyone know??
REDCHEQHEN Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 if you where to use lights on your race team would this not make them moult the flights early??? anyone know?? I would have thought so, I think this idea is reserved for non-racing stock
Guest jason Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Ribble, if you use lights on young birds, it makes them moult and the theory is a new coat for when racing starts, hence what they call the lightness system, as opposed to darkness system, I've tried both and darkness birds beat lightness birds every time. hope this helps. Sean, all my birds are now through the moult, I light the loft from 2.30pm till 5.30pm and put heating on through the night-5.30pm till 7.30am, if anybody decides to try this make sure your heaters can't catch fire (I use oil filled radiators) but in past I used the convector heaters and some straw blew into one and it caught fire :'( luckily I was at the loft at the time) also remember... all early bred young birds are automaticly on darkness (dark nights) unless you light them up(which I don't reccomend) keep em dark and they hold their flights, when 'lighter' nights come in spring I put curtains on to keep em dark they only get 8 hours of light per day. jason
Guest WINGS 04 Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 14th feb widowhood cocks and stock birds... i can see how breeding in december help you win races just puts your feed bill up
rockinrick Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 mid december for me as i like to get early training in for ybs , also i will only let them sit 1 youngster on second round next year as doing away with stock birds after wards ;D ;D

ribble Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 hi, jason so you are only using lights and heating on your stock birds? when you raced young on the light system did you have to pull the tail flights to get them through the moult.
barlbylofts Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 16th dec for me as my wife has taken over the birds at the mo coz of work comitments and its her birthday so she will be pairing the birds up on that day lol
Guest jason Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 Ribble, I'm using lights and heating on stock birds and on my old bird race team, never had a problem using this method but remember I only light the loft till 17.30. yes I had to pull a few tail flights on one or two, I wouldn't reccomend the light system to anyone, darkness is a lot better and easier for young birds. jason
jimmy white Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 14th feb widowhood cocks and stock birds... i can see how breeding in december help you win races just puts your feed bill up agree with you wings , saves on grub , cleaning etc, and when their 10 weeks old ready to train , whereas these december bred birds are mostly trained too late, unless specialised in that system, and still trained at 10 weeks old , but too cold here for that [bad enough trying to train obs in april]
Guest Paulo Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 whats the best date to pair if your just flyimng young birds. Want to fly the young birds on natural as my work does not suit the darkness. I've heard if you pair them early it stops them moulting as fast?
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 agree with you wings , saves on grub , cleaning etc, and when their 10 weeks old ready to train , whereas these december bred birds are mostly trained too late, unless specialised in that system, and still trained at 10 weeks old , but too cold here for that [bad enough trying to train obs in april] THE COLD IS ONE OF THE FACTORS WE NEED TO CONSIDER UP HERE, WE HARDLY GET MUCH HEAT NEAR SUMMER NEVER MIND JANUARY /FEBRUARY, NEVER EVEN CONSIDERED HEATERS OF ANY KIND, JUST LEFT NATURAL THEY WILL LAY WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT AND SIT ON EGGS TILL THEY HATCH NO MATTER HOW COLD IT IS HERE
