why vaccinate stock birds??   when they are not ill??

not vaccinating builds up a good immune system for future birds.

do you go to the doctors just incase you get ill??  NO

well done westy son ;)

i have had young birds bad with canker, gave garlic water(strong) cleared up & came 5th,

just want a natural & healthy loft to build up a strong team of good birds that dont need treating for this & that.

but will treat if really needed.

isnt there that saying that prevention is better than cure, after reading all your posts i will be vaccinationg my stock birds along with everything else including the droppers  ;D i really dont want this disease, and at least its reasonably cheap to vaccinate it would be exeptionally expensive to replace the birds not to mention distressing.

just think £27 odd vaccinates 100 birds iv just paid £60 to have one horse tetenus boostered  :o which is yearly but id not go without as new horses cost alot to replace too lol

ps when is the best time to vaccinate old birds for racing ??? and can i vaccinate the stock anytime or do i have to have them signed off by the club too  ;D

all the best sharron

Because you don't have to have your stock birds vaccinated there is no requirement to have the vaccinations witnessed Sharron, we get our non-racing birds done at the same as the racers, but don't put their ring numbers on the vaccination sheet (some of them don't have rings on anyway !! ) Last year we had our birds vaccinated on January 15th, before pairing up.

Just did my OB racers and late bred racers yesterday. Intention was booster and new jabs be done at least 14 days before pairing up. :)

Before starting, read Colombovac leaflet, some interesting straight forward stuff there, but also stuff that raises some questions

(1) under 'contra-indications, warnings etc':-

do not vaccinate unhealthy pigeons

administer only subcutaneously [ie into the skin, not e.g. muscle = adverse reaction]

do not use during lay  ??

do not use around time of mating unless previously vaccinated ??

do not use in breeding birds unless previously vaccinated ??

(2) under Further info

The incubation period for PMV may be a few days to several weeks. After infection with the wild virus pigeons shed the virus from the eye and in their droppings

within 3-4 days. This means that infected birds can be a danger to others some days before their own symptoms appear. Excretion of wild virus from the infected bird continues for up to 6 weeks. So in addition to direct bird-to-bird contact, indirect spread thro hands, overalls, caps, boots, baskets, trucks  etc is also possible.

New birds should not be brought in unless vaccinated at least 14 days previously.

Vaccination is safe in breeding birds provided they are vaccinated before the start of breeding ??

Maternally-derived antibody [MDA] can interfere with the development of active immunity. Where it is likely that recent field infection or vaccination of the parent flock has stimulated a high antibody level and consequently a high level of MDA, the timing of the vaccination programme should be planned accordingly. ????????

Leaflet also says young birds can be vaccinated from 3 weeks of age. Kinda contradicts itself above ???????????? because the youngster inherits antibodies from a vaccinated parent ... and the vaccine might not take. I usually wait till 14 days before yb training begins before I vaccinate. Was going to change this year to straight out of the nest [4 weeks]. Not sure now!  :-/
