I ALWAYS PUT MAPLES IN POTS IN THE BOXES WHILE REARING THE YOUNGSTERS I FIND THE OLD BIRDS ALWAYS EAT PLENTY OF THEM BUT I FEED THEM  BREEDING MIXTURE IN THE FEEDERS ASWELL 2 OR 3 TIMES A DAY

Feed them as part of a mixture and find that they are not too popular with my birds. If I overfeed by say even one handful, then its a handful of maples that are left in the feeder.

Couple of years back tried Irish mix for breeding & racing, which had a lot of maples in it. Pretty expensive at the time £14 a 20 kg bag, same problem ... couldn't get them to eat all the maples.

My first feed is 100% peas and 2nd feed breeding mix if you feed in pots in the boxes then you don't have to do this. I do not have a heated loft so I like to give other seeds so they can maintain a good body heat. If you just put down a breeding mix some birds will not take the peas and pump the young with small seeds.

So by feeding 100% peas for first feed I know the young birds are getting them.

Think I slipped up with the price.  :)

Buckton's Irish, year was 2005, and it was nearly £12 for a 20kg bag at Larbert Mill.. about £3 a bag more than I was used to paying .. went for it that year because Buckton's blurb said could be fed as a breeding & racing mix.

Also take your point about mixes and straights. In 2006 because of trouble year before, fed beans only + hormoform, during breeding & racing. Didn't have any problem getting them to eat beans so reckon maybe something in the taste with maples?

2007 and based on experience of past two years, have gone back to 2004 with a seperate breeding  & racing mix, now with hormoform.  Maples problem again with the Breeders. I now don't like leaving feeding lying out for long so basically give a measured (reasonable) resting ration, but until I got the amount to feed right, was left with maples ... which was added to their next, smaller ration, until 'all gone at first sitting'. Again, as I've posted elsewhere, moving 'on' and intend to try Gem's G10 pellets from pairing up, 8-10% added to breeding & racing mixes.
