The reason I ask is because boffins now say that pigeons use their sense of smell along with the sun, magnetic fields & sight to home. In the search for faster pigeons I believe over the years we now breed pigeons with smaller wattles. If the wattle on pigeons is used in anyway to enhance their ability to home and we are breeding this out pigeons could this be a reason why we are encountering bigger loses.

wouldnt know if this was right or not, but certainly food for thought, years ago the cocks looked like cocks with bigger wattles and bolder heads ,,,now some of them look like street pigeons [ healthy ones ;D],,,,,,,have read about this though tony.

Wattle is the soft covering of the passages carrying air from the nose to the sinuses in the bird's head.

Know what you are saying, but like big 'cocky' heads, big wattles were seen by some of the older breeders as additional ballast the bird had to carry that it could well do without.

Was at a good fanciers lofts not long back, when he made a point of makinhg me note that he liked these '8' birds because they held and kept a smaller wattle, indeed didn't ever seem to really get big ... therefore I quoted 'Ah so they always look younger' lol... But he thought, felt that this was a better pigeon. This wnt, or has gone completely over my head as to what he point was and why ... But he is a tip top flyer, and a very knowlegdeable man.
