THE FIFER Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 if u want the second egg would suggest u put in a dummy, but also find out why it was broken, flattened looks like something else going in their nest as it looks like a fight,

Wiley Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 what about soft shelled egg? doesnt necessarily mean birds are fighting
T_T Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Hi Paul 1, I think the right advice is to put a dummy egg in the nest but I think one bit of VERY GOOD ADVICE I was given quite a few years ago was that after the birds had safely paired up, REMOVE the fronts of the nestboxes completely so that should a stray cock or hen venture in there, they could escape without perhaps fighting and breaking the eggs.
paul l Posted March 7, 2007 Author Report Posted March 7, 2007 what about soft shelled egg? doesnt necessarily mean birds are fighting whats this mean and can i do out to fix it
Guest slugmonkey Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 If you think its soft, start giving Oyster shell grit and vitamins, you may also want to start giving Probiotics as well
Guest Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Think you'll spot a soft shelled egg OK, because it hasn't got a shell, its only got the membrane, or something that looks like the surface of a golf ball only no sheen and rubbery-looking. If you've got broken eggshell in the nest, then you have a normal egg, but broken. Sounds real stupid, but true Shell is mainly calcium, taken from the hen bird's legs (the bone the rings go round). Keep the hen well supplied with soft grit (the 'animal' kind: marine animal shells, eggs etc) as this is assimilated (digested if you like) by the bird and probably the bird's main source of calcium. The hard grit (rock, flint etc) is the other kind of grit, hard grit, it isn't assimilated, but used in the gizzard to grind the grain down, much like an old flour mill wheel. So you should be feeding two kinds of grit.

I also take the fronts off, it also makes cleaning much easer. You can also take just one half off that is just as good.
Flyer Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Hi Paul 1, I think the right advice is to put a dummy egg in the nest but I think one bit of VERY GOOD ADVICE I was given quite a few years ago was that after the birds had safely paired up, REMOVE the fronts of the nestboxes completely so that should a stray cock or hen venture in there, they could escape without perhaps fighting and breaking the eggs. done the above this year no hassle at all no broken egg but if i did or have a clear egg i would always put a pot egg in, i had a cock last year than would sit to tight and crush them. this year i let him sit his 2 eggs and a pot egg. two youngsters in the young bird shed this year
