kev01293 Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 ive just come back home after being away for 5 days and after letting the pigeons out for excercise i noticed a 05 bird laying in her nestbox unable to move, she has lost a lot of body weight and her eyes are closed and seem swollen, ive fed her some water with glucose but she is unable to stand on her own,can anybody give me any idea what might be wrong and how i can treat it?? many thanks kev
Sajfos Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 From Your description I am wondering if the Hen has become egg-bound . Is She sitting eggs already which would rule this out ? This does not explain the swollen eyes . Unfortunately there are many ailments which could give similar symptoms the swollen eyes could indicate Ornithosis . Please try to include more details .
madmaxlofts Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 i wouldnt mess about with her maybe better puting her out ov her misery mate
me Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 if its an amazingly valuable bird and you can afford get it to a vet although for what useful purpose i am not exactly sure. To be honest valuable or not he kindest thing to do would be to put put the bird out of its misery. sorry you are having this hassle genuinely hope the wee bird proves me wrong.
Guest Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Hens can go off their legs occassionally laying, not experienced it but read about condition called hypocalcaemia symptoms birds loose use of all their muscles, you need to give her calcium straight away or she will die and you need to check she does not have an egg stuck...if she does you need to get it out,use some vasseline and or a warm bath to lubricate and very gently try to massage it out.Good Luck, and if it is something else at least you tried
Guest Vic Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Who was in charge, during your 5 day absence? The problem will most probably lie there! : : : Vic.
THE FIFER Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 could be the lack of calcium, this happens in the breeding season,
jimmy white Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 try old hands elementals ,,, its two small containers one with calcium ,, other yeast ,, bird will be perfect in 48 hours
kev01293 Posted April 4, 2007 Author Report Posted April 4, 2007 my wife looked after the birds while i was away and shes sure that they all came down for corn and drank water yesterday but i cant see how the hen went downhill so quick overnight? she seemed to perk up a bit when i gave her water/glucose and as i found her in her box by the floor im wondering wether shes been without water for a few days cos she was too weak to get to drinker? my wife does her best with the birds if im away but im wondering wether she just didnt notice the sick bird? anyway il give the hen a calcium tablet and a warm bath to see if that helps but im not expecting her to make it till the morning-i hope im wrong? thanks for the replies kev
jimmy white Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 i think,, kev, had it been lack of water , the otherbirds would be the same ,, youll find thatsome hens loose the power of their legs after or during laying ,, wish you all the best with the bird [ whatever you do,, dont blame the wife ;D ;D ;D ;D]
Guest CS Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 could be the lack of calcium, this happens in the breeding season, That's what i think, Hope your bird improve in a few days.
Guest Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 As most of the guys have already stated, Calcium, Brewers Yeast and Cod liver oil. You can get these in capsule/tablet form from any good chemist. Also ensure the birds have access to grit, pickstones and minerals. These are imperative during breeding! Other than that, I hope you haven't got Salmonella or Paratyphus. However, if this is confirmed, a treatment of Parastop or Parat 205 should do the necessary, but I hope its the calcium mate, thats what it sounds like to me! Good luck with your hen!
THE FIFER Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 ask sapper he had this problem, and it was the lack of calcium, and he treated it i just cant remember what it was he gave them, it was a tablet, milk of magnesium or something but dont go by this wait till sapper comes on. i will ask him when i see him.
Guest Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 Not really enough detail given to point us in any direction; we don't know whether the hen has recently laid or not, or due to lay, and wouldn't have expected that to have caused rapid loss of body and swollen eyes. Eye problem did make me wonder if the hen has had a right doing from another bird, or pair, perhaps wandered into the wrong box? May also just be confirmation the bird is suffering, perhaps picked up something harmful, e.g weedkiller etc from the garden.
Roland Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 Ah another devioce on the horizan then! lol Sorry to hear m8, but if it's valuable / wanted, go to the vets and no messing about ... or send a dropping sample to Johnny 11 here, he'll even do the Bacterial tests if need be... £8 I believe, and well worth having his advice.

kev01293 Posted April 4, 2007 Author Report Posted April 4, 2007 well as i expected my hen bird didnt make it till this morning, she was dead at 6am when i checked her and had been dead for at least a couple of hours, i tried the calcium tab and the warm bath last night in case she was egg bound as advised but that didnt help her droppings were 95 per cent light green water with a small brown lump in it (thats the best way i can explain it) she had lost a lot of weight but my wife is sure that the hen took corn the day before i got home but im wondering what disease could take and kill a pigeon in 24 - 48 hours,as i said before her eyelids were red and swollen but the actual eyes were dry and had started to shrink back into her head, any advice would be much appreciated kev ps all of my other pigeons seem to be up and about and lively and are not showing any signs of sickness but how long will it take before i know the rest of my pigeons are in the clear health- wise
Roland Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 Need disecting... ask Johnny to have a deckers,
Sally McQueen Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 Sounds horrible Kev, poor little girl Hope u find out what caused it
Guest Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 It could be just natural causes Kev.Had she being going light for a while?.When one of mine died unexpectedly 3 weeks ago I went into total panic mode and convinced it must be something contagious went straight onto the anti biotics, all the other birds were fine....but we panic don't we.If you are not at all over crowded and you keep everything clean and dry and your birds haven't mixed recently why do we assume it must be some awful virus or bacteria, why can't it just be say a tumour/heart problem etc, etc?.Keep a very close eye on your other birds and take your vets advice, but sometimes I think we need to accept that the odd bird does just die.
jimmy white Posted April 4, 2007 Report Posted April 4, 2007 a p,m would be the answer ,, i once had a hen 4th in a sat race dead by the next friday,, pm showed egg forming and growing in the" wrong place" some thing like the fallapion tubes in a human
kev01293 Posted April 4, 2007 Author Report Posted April 4, 2007 thanx for the replies my birds have been treated this year for canker as a precaution and were due to be treated for cocci and worms when the hen went sick and died, ive had a couple of strays in over the last 2 weeks and some feral pigeons feed on next doors bird table so im wondering if there,s a connection there as my birds like to peck around in the garden after excercise and maybe theyve been where the ferals have pecked around ? i managed to get to the two strays before they got to the drinkers so im assuming that there hasnt been any infection spread through the water? at the moment its a matter of me keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best? kev :-/
