Ali Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 hi all Just wondering how long do pigeon eggs take to hatch..?
Guest Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 Are you sure your dates are right? If you cant see them chipping yet, gently hold the egg to your ear and you should be able to hear the youngster chipping away inside. If you hold it up to the light, if the egg looks dark inside its full, but if you can see the light through it then its empty! 18 days from being laid as Hellsbellz quite rightly states is what the eggs should have hatched by!
barlbylofts Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 18 to 19 days normally it takes always mark mine in the calinder and always hatch on time
Ali Posted April 19, 2007 Author Report Posted April 19, 2007 well am not 100% sure ,, but i will check the eggs 2day,,,havent handled them yet so far.,. but is ther chance both eggs will be duff..!!! i hope not...
barlbylofts Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 are they clear hold them up to the light and if they are dark there is a baby in there if they look light they duff
Guest Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 Remember the 18 day count starts from the date the second egg was laid.
Guest Vic Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 When you are experienced in the game, you will be able to tell if the eggs are filled without having to touch them. The egg shell changes colour, from pure white to a greyish off white during the incubation period. Compare one filled egg in the nest, with one that's not, and you will start to learn. Also after ten days sitting, a filled egg will float in a bowl of warm water, whilst an unfilled one will sink like a brick. I mention warm water, because you don't go chilling eggs do you? Vic.

I asked this theory some time ago, I was visiting a loft and the guy lifted the sitters, looked at the eggs and decided on there state without touching them, 10/10 he was right, I recently bought a candler, which is a small powerful torch, after five days you can see all the veins and at ten days you can see the heart beat When we used to collect wild birds eggs you would float them to tell their state so you could blow them, same theory
jimmy white Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 You say that "you can keep eggs fresh for a time", how long can you keep eggs fresh for before they can be incubated? ??) depends how their stored , but i have had them hatch no prob after lying on the bunker for a week,[as long as their turned , regular]
chickadee Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 So you have to take them away from the nest and turn them what once every day? or more than once a day?
chickadee Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 Okay thanks, that can come in usefull in the future. :)
