Hi Again Peeps,

Sorry for all the questions recently but with my loft delivery imminent I think I need to get everything ready. First of all I need to get feeding for the pigeons. What does ev1 recommend and where can I go to get them in London? Also what suplements should I be giving?

I have tried to search on the internet but nothing comes up and I am getting frustrated.

THanks again.

Yeah Steve, could not wait anymore. I am really excited like a little child going to Disney Land or something. I know I was gonna wait until next year but once I got started in all the planning and phoning around to find out prices for lofts it got too much for me and I just ordered the loft.

Rose, thanks for that, I will try and contact them. I was hoping to get ybs from Louella, some Busschaerts and some Janssens. Its the only place I found on the net that sells birds. I used to be good searching for things on the internet but these days I find diddley squat!

Thanks

I ordered from Phoenix Timber in Canning Town. Its going to be 9' x 6' with two sections and a landing deck, Nothing that extraordinary. Thought I would start small and go from there.  Not ordered the birds yet. Gonna wait until I get the loft and take a drive down to Louella and get to choose my birds (hopefully). Spoke to one of them yesterday to find out loads of info. I know I am rushing into this but its been a long time coming and I cant wait anymore.

There is a topic listed on here about what everyone on here is feeding...look it up.Supplement wise I think homoform, aviform ultimate, strike, origano stym and plain old garlic and cider vinegar are some of the best, along with a good variety of grits. With feed and supplements you can go on forever,so much choice it can get overwhelming,it's each to their own!!Of course you can start getting into the realms of all the other stuff too, probiotics, multi vits..on and on to the point where the birds never drink clear ordinary water which is so good for them!

For now then the simplest way to look at it is: - you will start with young birds, so you need to find corn shop in your local area. They will sell a whole range of corns, but to keep it simple, get a bag of young bird corn (Verselle Laga do a good one). So you will need a trough and a drinker which the corn shop will also sell. You will need to get some grit and minerals and these need to be put down in pots for the birds at all times. I use a drinker to put mine in (minus the water lol), as that way they are covered and no droppings can contaminate them.

Multi-vitamins are a good thing to have a hand and should be given once a week to the YBs. Also CiderVinegar is a good cheep product you should purchase.

The list is endless of things you could purchase for them, but for now its best to keep it simple and re-learn about the birds, as the health of pigeons has moved on and better understood these days.

A good book would be your best purchase. I recently got a book called 'The Flying Vet', but it may be scare you a bit so would recomment a book by Colin Osman called 'The Racing Pigeon' which describes everything you need to know for now.

Thanks guys and gals for all your advice. I know with you around I will get through this exciting/confusing period. I have just bought the basic stuff from "Everything for pets" and it cost me a small fortune. Just bought drinking troughs and some mulitvits and some perches as my loft will come withouot them.

Thanks Rose, I have emailed both to see what they can do for me. I cant believe it is such a struggle to find a club and its even harder for me to find a place that sells pigeon food. :o :o

Build a Wired avary with a solid frame. A overlapping false roof a foot to 18 inches slope - forward so you can see anything on the roof. Then close with airvents, and just a few removable nest boxes place upon each other on top of a covered in stand. I have plastic cladding on outer which I can replace with Air Vents to suit them and the weather.

I was hoping to get 5 Busshaerts and 5 Janssens so hopefully something will come of them. Basically if they dont fly well they will still be welcome in my loft. My cats are always hungry. lol, just kidding, could never do it. :o
