If you havnt already make it a priority to get those ybs vaccinated in the next couple of weeks, it will make it easier for all of us when those early races come around in the heat of July and August.

Intended doing it @ 5/6 weeks old, let down - twice.  :(

Colombovac production probs hasn't supplied Pigeon Pharmacy on 1st expected date - end of April; new date Mid-May. No option take Nobilis with Oct 07 expiry date; don't like it but looks like my OB & YB 2008 jabs will be done Oct 07.  >:(

Sorry, kinda garbled my post. Will do my 2007 YBs this weekend latest.  :)

Usually what vaccine is left-over I would use for my OBs in January 2008 ... but the stuff I'm expecting expires Oct 2007 - so I'd need to do my OBs Oct 2007 for the 2008 season.

Just got me vaccine & gun today.  :)

My 1st ever vaccination was done with leaveover Nobivac [now Nobilis] from a clubmate , and I've got Nobilis this time.

I think it important you always read the manufacturer's instructions because I've just discovered Colombovac & Nobilis are very different.  >:(

I'm used to Colombovac's 0.2 ml dose, minimum age 21 days, and 14 days to obtain immunity - before mixing with other birds [race, show]. ....  :)

Quite shocked to find Nobilis is  0.25 ml dose, minimum age 5 weeks, and 4 weeks to obtain immunity , preferably 6 weeks before mixing with other birds [race, show]. ....  :(

Think its back to Colombovac for me from next year ...

do the members think they should be vaccinated every year ,,,,,or would a half dose do the job as ob,s ????

my thoughts are that theres big money in this,,, yes they need vaccinated as ybs but not so sure a full dosage as older birds is needed

I've been advised to do the YB twice in year of birth, once early as poss and then just before racing! Helps boost immunity I'm told and I think it may be good advice!!

The benefits of annual vaccination are far from clear and there are many in the veterinary world who are against it.

First imagine every animal carries one soldier to fight a particular battle with a particular enemy. The barracks are always full. Every time the animal is vaccinated, a new soldier appears, but the barracks are full and to make room for the new soldier, an old soldier is discarded.  :( So +1 PMV soldier and -1 Paratyphoid soldier might be the outcome.   >:( Bird might eventually end up immune to PMV and susceptible to everything else.   :'(

My original post on vaccination study:-

Just a note expanding on the on-going debate in many domestic animal circles on the need for annual vaccination.

This is a short extract describing a scientific study commissioned by the Home Office where immune memory is discussed.

04september-2006

368: Studies on immune memory and regulation

Date: 29th Aug 2006

This programme of work is intended to extend our understanding of immunological memory and immune regulation with the attendant benefits that may follow for human and animal health.

The reason vaccines work is because the immune system exhibits memory, it responds better the second time it sees a microbe. How it does this is still hotly debated. For instance, immune memory is very long-lasting, however, the cells in the immune system are always under severe competition for space and survival, as every time an immune response occurs more cells are made; so how can memory cells survive for long periods? This is one of the questions that will be addressed in this project. Another question relates to how flexible in modality the memory response is, eg. will the memory response be the same as the primary response and if not how is this achieved? It’s important that it has this flexibility is maintained as otherwise memory may be unable to protect us in all situations and may cause damaging reactions (eg. by making inappropriate inflammatory cytokines).

All my young birds are already done but i dont like having to do them again as old but i dont think there is enough research being done to find out why and if we get any benifit out of vaccinating every year afterwards!!

Spot on Tammy, went like a dream today.

A Plus for Nobilis is they provide a sterile kit. Pour surgical spirit into a little plastic measuring cap, and push sponge into it which sucks it up. Dab sponge on bird's back at base of the neck and it parts the feathers, you're left with bare skin, see exactly where your jaggin the bird, gun fires the right dose, so your concentration is all on the bird, and you jab the needle into the sponge between birds to sterilise it, so no passing anything on between birds.

Massive improvement on last year.  ;D
